Persephone, Goddess of the Springtime, Queen of the Underworld
Persephone, The daughter of Demeter
and Zeus, was the Goddess of the Springtime, until she was raped
and kidnapped by Hades, God of the Underworld. Her shame forced
her to marry Hades and spend six months of the year in the
underworld. The other six months she was allowed to spend with
her mother.
Persephone was known as Proserpine to the Romans and Kore (or Cora), which means 'The Maiden'. The pomegranate and mint are said to have been sacred to Persephone. She also raised Adonis, who was Aphrodite's child. Some myths also say that she had a child with Zeus named Zagreus.
