CentaursDeianeira and the Centaur Nessus

In Greek Mythology the Centaurs were born of the union between Centaurus and the Mares of Thessaly. Centaurus was the son of Ixion and Nephele, a cloud Zeus had formed to look like Hera to fool the love struck Ixion. The Children of Centaurus were men from the waist up and horses from the waist down.

The myth may also have been created in the outlying areas of Thessaly and thrace where the horse was first introduced in the second century before Christ. The people of these communities saw the nomads who captured and trained the wild horses as being one with the animals. They may have made no distinction when they first saw a man atop a horse and assumed they must be a mythical creature indeed.

The Centaurs are generally shown as wild and lustful, with a passion for wine. Alternately they are shown as healers and medicine men. They showed men many of the arts and often were assumed to be immortal if not godly.

The most famous Centaur is probably Chiron, who trained Heracles as a youth and was later killed, on accident, by his pupil.
