My mother has been a school teacher for more than 10 years and has been taking home tuitions for kids residing in our vicinity. Some of them are economically and socially backward. I first took to teaching school going kids during my freshman year, in order to assist her in teaching kids. I take lessons in “Basics of Computer Technology” for a few economically backward high school students (Grade 7 – Grade 10) in our locality. These lessons help them to understand the basics of computer hardware, Microsoft Office tools and Internet. Since computers and internet have become a necessity in 21st century, my aim of taking up the subject is to provide students, who cannot afford their own computer, a background that will help them later in their career or studies.

Should you need to know more or have a look at pictures/reports of schools my group has visited, please send an e-mail at [email protected]

In my sophomore year, IEEE Bombay Section provided me an opportunity to do a similar task at a larger scale. With three of my very good friends, I formed a team to educate school children about the technology of Internet. We went to two schools in the city and two countryside schools. One of the schools was catering specifically to tribal kids. Explaining such students (who were astonished to see a laptop and a projector while setting up our presentation) about technology took a lot of effort but it was a memorable event nevertheless.

ABACUS

MATHEMATICS

ABACUS is an ancient chinese instrument, believed to the first device to assist humans in calculation. After the advent of calculators and computers and so called "modern" mathematics, it's great power has unfortunately been neglected. I have a good knowledge of mathematics using ABACUS and I currently train kids aged below 12 how to perform speed mathematics using ABACUS. Seen above are myself and my students.

It has been proved scientifically that children between ages 7-13, if trained to perform mathematics using abacus, eventually perform moe complex calculations 15 % faster on an average compared to their peers, during their later years.
