Charles Darwin was born on 12th February 1809 in a large house on The Mount, built by his father, Dr. Robert Darwin in approximately 1800. The property is currently used by Shropshire County Council although there are plans to open it to the public as a museum.
Darwin spent his formative years in Shrewsbury and was educated at Shrewsbury School, his statue standing outside the former school, now the town Lending Library.
