This was a fairly odd run - I went in with a whimper, and out with a bang!  For Sci-Fi, I decided to produce one film and nine sequels, to see what how long it would take for the viewing public to tire of the SOS.

Imagine my surprise when both "Alien" and "The Terminator" were available for purchase the first month out. Oh, the horror of trying to choose between the two!  Well, I ended up using them both. "The Terminator" performed nicely at the box office, and I was gearing up to release sequels to both films during alternating Julys, when disaster struck!

"Alien" tanked.  It didn't stick it's little pinky-toe in, either - it belly-flopped worse that any movie I've ever made except "Waterworld". I was going to dump the "Alien" sequels entirely, but I already had a screenwriter working on "Alien II" ("Aliens" was already taken, and I wasn't gonna hunt for it).

Soooo...I broke a cardinal rule of big-budget flix (gave points out like Halloween candy), and moved the sequel release dates to December. Meanwhile, Terminator II: Judgment Day made such a paltry profit, I moved the release dates for the next 3 sequels back to June (I was leery of May releases, and didn't want the franchise releases too close together), and decided to go with 2 releases per year since I no longer had to contend with a single release month.

If you take a peek at the bottom line for "Alien III", keep in mind that it was in production when "Alien II" was released. After the results were in for "Alien II", I would have shot myself right there had I had a gun. Had I not freaked and given out points, I would have equaled or outright beat my performance during the action/adventure genre run. Oh, me of little faith...

Oddities:

  • You know how much I love me some Miss Gillian - she was nominated 4 times for Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress. Her last two nominations were Best Supporting for the final sequels in both franchises - and she won for "Terminator V: Father and Son".

  • I also adore Michael Biehn - he was also nominated twice in the Best Supporting category for his roles in the final sequels - and won for "Alien V: Encounter".

  • Audiences gave James Cameron and Ahh-nuld lower ratings with each new sequel...but I didn't have the heart to change the formula.

  • Every one of the films received a nomination for Best Screenplay or Best Screenplay Adaptation, because I only used two writers for the franchises who were 5* overall and 5* polishers.
