ACTION FLIX:

This genre run was very lucrative, with an average profit per film of over $521 million. Considering that this genre run included one colossal dud (Oceans Eleven...$13 million profit when I packed that puppy with the top talent...I hope those "stars" burn in hell!), that's pretty good.

Oddities:

  • I NEVER give points to talent for major genre films...except by mistake.  I made such a mistake with Tarantino, my director for "Saving Private Ryan". I left his points in, and that little oops cost me $70 million.  Sigh.

  • I had Eddie Murphy produce, direct, and star in "Shaft"...$31.5 million in cost overruns later, he turned out my second weakest film profit-wise.  Note to self:  DO NOT let a 3* actor direct a film, nor star in one if I can help it.

  • Why did "Oceans Eleven" tank??? Top talent, July release, highest number of ancillary contracts of the group...

Maybe I should have added some Groundbreaking F/X - the average profit for Action Flix including Groundbreaking F/X was more than twice the profit of the Flix that didn't.

THRILLA IN MANILA:

Since I can only support 10 hyperlinked pages using MS Publisher, my last 2 genres experiments will be sharing room with previous genre runs. Sigh.

Anyway, I haven't made many Thrillers before now,  so I generally stuck with a basic formula budget that I ripped off of the HM message board somewhere.  Next time around, I'll probably throw caution to the wind, and experiment with STV low-budget thrillers, big-budget blockbusters with lots of FX, and bare minimum budget flix packed with as much star power as I can throw in without losing my shirt.

Miscellaneous Tidbits:

  • Another Best Pic Mogie - yeah!

  • The thrillers made some surprisingly nice showings at the box office during summer months.

  • On the other hand, releasing three thrillers in three consecutive months pretty much guaranteed that one would be a loser.

  • "Yellow Journalism" damn near swept the Mogies - it lost Best Actor and Best Screenplay, but still, not too shabby for $2 mil in pre-Mogie ads!

  • The worst performers of the bunch were dark, violent thrillers...I probably should have released those in October, playing up on the scary aspects of the films.
