| The Sinha family can trace its history from the 16th century. Our earliest known ancestors were the brothers Rai Das and Badan Singh Das, who came from Hargaon (in present day Uttar Pradesh) and were kanungoes of the Mughal emperors. These two brothers founded our zamindari of Raipur Khajri. Their descendant Munshi Laxmi Prasad, who was a vakil or lawyer (circa 1775), witnessed the building of the Gol Ghar (circular granary) at Patna. Being a prosperous and generous man, he invited all his gotias (brethren) to stay with him at Patna during the Great Famine of 1770. Scores of them were fed okraya hua chana (sprouted gram) for lunch and rotis for dinner. It is said that the Munshi never ate anything that had not first been shared amongst his guests. His successor was Munshi Govind Sahai, who sired three sons and three daughters. Govind Sahai was responsible for the loss of the bulk of our zamindari comprising of Naubalpur, Mulwai Chak and Raipur Khajri to the British because he was not aware of the "Sunset Law" that required all taxes to be paid before the sun had set on the due date. Govind Sahai's sons were Munshi Ram Lal, Bal Mukund Sahai and Harihar Prasad. The Hon'ble Rai Bahadur Gajadar Prasad was the son of Munshi Ram Lal. |
