XFM Interview
Why
are you re-releasing Bionic?
-"Different producer"
-"Wanted to do it in a different way really"
-"No disrespect to the first producer, we just felt it needed a
little more balls behind it really, and we tried to deliver it a bit
better and make it a better record but it was always one of our favourite
songs"
-"We were always gonna bring it out again anyway"
Is
that why it was only on limited edition to begin with?
-"Absolutely"
Then
it was your decision to re-release it?
-"Absolutely, I mean no-one argued it with us"
-"If they had there would have been trouble-dead!"
(laughter)
-"Oh God yes!"
Now,
all the tracks I've heard off the album - I haven't heard it all, have
you guys? (to studio)
"no"
So none of us have heard it
-"Nor us!"
(laughter)
Are
they all short tracks cos you do tend to band out 2 and a half minute
tracks, which I love
-"Yeah well, there is a couple of longer tracks on the
album"
-"3 minutes"
(laughter)
-"Which is just stupidly long!"
(more laughter)
-"No it's just the way we write, we like to keep it short and
stuff like that. A lot of people say "you play really short
sets" but, you know, we play a whole albums worth of sets-it's
just the way it is"
How
many tracks are there on the album?
-"There's twelve"
twelve
-"31 minutes"
31 minutes?!
(laughter from studio)
Wow,
that's really good but it's got to be one of the shortest albums in
the last god knows how many years.
-"You can listen to it over and over again though, you don't get
bored with it"
And if
there is a track that you don't like, obviously we like them all, but
you don't have to wait long for the next one!
(laughter)
-"Very true, very true!
Do you
go to gigs often?
-"When we can, when we're not rehearsing at home-"
-"You keep on saying we're rehearsing!"
-"Sorry, sorry, when we're not hamming them and gettin' hammered
then we go out. We went to see Ash in London the other night at their
album launch party."
-"Emmm, who've we seen that's any good? Actually that's a
complete lie that we go to gigs- we never go to gigs!
-"No we don't go to see anyone at all- apart from our support
acts or if we're supporting someone else."
-"Yeah we see our support bands"
And
you did something with last man standing, didn't you?
-"Who's
that?"
-"What's that then?"
-"Oh, they did that thing with us"
-"Oh yeah!"
(Laughter)
-"I was feelinmg poorly that night, I didn't see anybody"
-"I didn't see anything that night!"
(Laughter)
Right,
first single you ever bought, Maxi?
-"Well-"
-" Uh oh!"
-"I was sort of at junior school and you know those little school
disco's and you get a slow dance at the end, well, a girl asked me to
dance and I'd never danced with a girl before so I was quite charmed
by it, and it was err, Debbie Gibson with "Foolish-"
(Inaudible due to cries of "I'm leaving the band" by Martyn)
Did
you go out and buy it?
-"Well I had to, it was like- oh come on, I was only ten years
old! It was quite an emotional moment!"
I've
got to respect your honesty for admitting to that. Nelster, what's
yours?
-"I was about 12 or 13 years old and I went to WH Smiths and
bought "black Velvet" by Alanah Miles"
-"Ha, and he said my choice was bad!"
(Laughter)
"Lets just leave this band now and start a new
one"
(More Laughter)
All
right, thank you lads. . . When are you in London?
-"19th of may. Just keep buyin tickets- if they tell you there's
none left there is, theres loads!"
And as
we said before, you're an excellent band live, so we've got a live
track, recorded at sound. This is Scream and Shout. Thank you lads.
