`She watched his every move out of the corner of her eye. Although she was conversing with her friend Axel, her thoughts were nowhere near the topic of the conversation. He was going on about his crazy adventure with his mailman, and she nodded and laughed every now and then to make up for her lack of interest. Ugghshe did it again. Why wont she stop touching him? Lucy could not help but feel something boil inside of her as she watched her boyfriend Max getting fondled by another annoying debate club member. This time the girl was tall and blond and her high pitched giggle pierced the air sending shivers of disgust and aggravation through Lucys spine. If she touches him one more time Loose.ya there? So anyways..Im telling the mailman to sample my special homemade brownies..cause you know I have this bake sale at school rightand of course I dont want to donate nothing that wont taste good.but get thisthe best part.I had laced them with some special ingredientsif you catch my drift.. continued Axel with a laugh. He momentarily interrupted her thoughts. Axel.youre kidding, she opened her eyes wide to show how shocked she was and then giggled because she knew thats why he had started telling the story, Youre absolutely terrible. Shit! She touched him. Thats it..Im leaving this damn lunchroom and I am not talking to him for the rest of seventh period. Hey Ax.I really wish I could stay to finish hearing what happened..but I have to do my English. Ill be in the library. You understand. She hurriedly left before anyone could stop her. She felt somewhat guilty for leaving her friend midway his funny tale but there was only so much she could take. I hate him. I hate him. I hate him. I hate himShe walked quickly over to the garbage can and dumped her tray sending one meaningful glance back at her jerk of a boyfriend. Ooooh..I hate him. Swinging her backpack across her left shoulder she headed straight for the girls washroom. Once inside she slumped down and sat in front of the mirror. It wasnt that she wasnt aware that she was being a jealous girlfriend, it was merely that she had already confronted Max about his over flirtatiousness and he had obviously disregarded her feelings. She stared at herself in the mirror and was dissatisfied with what stared back at her. Was it her unruly hair with its steady flow of split ends? The pimple on her forehead? The fact that she was struggling in school or that she couldnt fit into a size 0 pants? Deep down her insecurities ate at her, ripping her confidence to shreds. She cared so much about him. It perplexed her on how he could find the audacity to do something like this to her. What gives him the right? she wondered out loud. Suddenly her sadness turned to a bubbling anger deep down somewhere in her belly. The sudden urge to pay him back sprung from within her. She was not about to be showed up like this. Today was the spring fling at her school. She was supposed to be meeting Max at 7:00 so that they could go together. Smiling defiantly in the mirror she stood up and gathered her belongings. Oh you just wait Max. You just wait. The school beckoned to her as she pulled up to the front of the building in her car. Its bright lights stuck out in the neighborhood and it looked alive with vibrant life, contrasting the dead quietness that enveloped it. All the surrounding houses were dark and uninviting, but her school looked as if it new about the party that was about to explode within its walls. She kissed her father goodnight and slowly stepped out of the car. Her skirt fluttered in the wind. It was chilly. She clutched her jacket tighter to her and walked over to the entrance. A line had already begun to form for tickets. Her heals clicked with every step and the excitement fluttered through the air like butterflies. Butterflies. They were in her stomach too. She could never explain it. She always got butterflies in her stomach when it came to dances. Maybe it was the fact that it was an altogether beautiful atmosphere. All the guys cleaned up with their buttoned up shirts, and gelled back hair. As she walked past a group of guys waiting for their dates she could smell their thick cologne. She stopped and breathed it in. There was something about the way cologne made her feel. Sexy. It made her feel sexy. She placed herself at the end of the wall waiting for Max. Today she had put more effort into her appearance then any other dance at her school. She didnt want to feel cute. She didnt want to feel pretty. She wanted to feel sexy. Sexy and confident, because the plan she was intending on pursuing required exactly those qualities. She left her hair down this time and she wore a low cut, lacy pink and black top with a short black skirt. She was ready to entice. Max arrived five minutes later. She called out his name when she saw him. He turned his head and when he saw her, slowly walked over and gave her a hug and a peck on the forehead. You look nice. he acknowledged quickly. Thanks, she coughed. So do you. She could feel some awkward tension building up. They hadnt really talked for about a week, only exchanging small talk on the phone until someone made an excuse to hang up. They would pass each other in the hall with a raise of the eyebrows or a casual flick of the hand to acknowledge that one was aware of the other. Always he would be with his clique of girls and she with her posse of boys. They were both comfortable at most around the opposite sex and for the most part, she blamed this for their growing distance. They both possessed far to much pride to admit their own jealousy and instead of confronting the situation which would have been the more mature way of handling the situation, they merely fought fire with fire and flirted more. Which was exactly what she was going to do now. It hadnt quite registered in her mind that perhaps this technique was not the most successful approach to the situation, but she was convinced that it was her only means of defense. All she wanted was to be noticed by him. All she wanted was the reassurance that he cared. If only his pride would falter for just a moment and a hint of jealousy for her sake shine through his words or actions, she knew that she would drop her childish faade and embrace him with all the love in her body. Because she did love him.thats why she felt compelled to do this. She needed to see if he to loved her back. It was a test thats all she told herself. The future of their relationship was dependant upon this day. She was sure how much more of his not caring she could take. If he didnt confront her about her flirtatious behavior tonight she wasnt sure what she would do. She needed to know he cared. He purchased the tickets and they stepped inside. The walls sparkled with ribbons, metallic streamers and bright blue and white balloons. She could already hear the music. Its beats thumped the ground sending vibrations through her entire body and pulsated throughout the room rhythmically. Her body was itching to dance and move to the music. She had felt so clamped up the entire week and now was the time for her to unleash. Once on the dance floor she recognized some of her girlfriends and rushed over to them energetically. Naturally, after all of them had complimented each other on how pretty they looked ,they joined hands and slithered through the crowd until they were in the middle of the dance floor. She didnt know what had happened to Max. Thats alright..hell notice me soon enough. Her favorite song came on. The crowd cheered when it hit the speakers and suddenly everyone looked around quickly for someone to dance with. It was one of those juke songs as the generation had the type of dance dubbed. Lucy rotated her hips in unison with the beat and let her body lose all inhibitions. It wasnt long before someone asked her to dance. She accepted and placed herself in front of the guy. He was older than her but that didnt matter at these types of events. Slowly she molded her body to his until they became one fluid motion. She turned her head and noticed Max. Perfect. They were right in his line of vision. He was watching her. She could feel it. She threw back her hair and whispered something pointless in the guys ear, giggling when she retreated. Throughout the night she kept up her antics. She danced with many guys, all the while hoping that Max had taken notice to her. He danced with a few girls, but they were all friends of his and none of them were any competition. For the most part he remained a wallflower, floating amongst the beverage table sipping silently on his sprite. He wasnt the school dance type of guy and the only reason he had come to the spring fling was because Lucy had mentioned that she wanted to go. Otherwise, she was sure that he would have preferred to have stayed at home. Hes only here because of me. She smirked. Hes only hereSuddenly she halted dead in her tracks. Wait..Hes only here because of ME. She stopped smirking. It was like it all dawned at her at once. What am I doing? GodI am such a bitch sometimes. She pushed her way through the crowd, shoving those who were in her way. The beverage table was empty except for two girls throwing ice cubes at each other. Where is he? Her heart began to thud. Her eyes scanned the table area and the dance floor but there wasnt any sign of his brown hair and black shirt. She did however find his good friend Sam trying to strike up a conversation with a cheerleader. She rushed over to him. Sam.do.you know where..Max is.. she panted as she placed her hands on his shoulders for support. Woahcalm down. He just left like 2 minutes ago. He said he wasnt feeling to good. answered Sam looking worried. Thud. A pile of stones dropped somewhere in her stomach. She grabbed her jacket off her chair and rushed out of the building. Maybe I can still catch him. She threw open the door with. A gust of wind and icy rain pelted her face. Great. Just what I need. Her jacket didnt have a hood so she started to run her heals stratching the gravel with every step. Faster and faster. Huge, cold droplets of rain exploded upon her scalp and her feet hurt as she tried to run as quick as she could. Screw this. She threw off her heals and carrying them in her right hand, broke out into a run. The ground was sopping wet but she didnt care. She had to catch him. She had to tell him she was sorry for acting so foolish. He should be at the Mulberry Ave. bustop. She crossed the street and squinted in the distance. She saw him. He was sitting underneath the plastic roof of the bus stop. She called out his name. He looked up in surprise. There you are! Why did you leave? Ive been looking everywhere for you. she sputtered out. No you werent. In fact I dont even think you knew I was there. He replied coldly, staring straight ahead. I knew you were there. I was just mad and being stupid. Im sorry for ignoring you. Please forgive me. She stood in front of him and tried to cup his face so she could look into his eyes. He retreated his face. No. Stop. This isnt the first time. Im tired of it. I always piss you off somehow. I dont know what I dobut it seems all my actions only make you mad. And once youre mad you always take your vengeance out on me in the same immature way. You throw yourself at all the guys in hopes of getting my attention. Im tired of it. But thats just it..maxie., her eyes watered. She was beginning to cry. I just wanted your attention. She wiped her eyes. The bus was coming. Look Lucy..I dunno if you and I are going to be able to work out. He turned away in pain and shoved his hands in his pockets. No.No.please no. she started sobbing, Maxie.I just wanted to see if you still cared..pleaseno The bus pulled up and swished open its doors. Lucy.. his eyes stared back at her with pain and deep brown depth. Grow up. He stepped into the bus and the doors closed behind him with a thud as the vehicle pulled away. She stood there sobbing in the rain watching the bus until her eyes became so cloudy from a mixture of tears and rain that she couldnt see it anymore. She stood there for awhile, for how long she couldnt remember. All she remembered doing was crying. She cried because of her foolishness, she cried for their relationship..but most of all..she cried because he was right. 1
