On the second morning I started the ten mile hike up the Bright Angel Trail back to the South Rim. The first rays of sunlight reach the upper canyon walls as seen from down in PipeCreek Canyon. The picture below shows the section of switchbacks called the "Devil's Corkscrew". The next photo shows a waterfall on Garden Creek.

Here are two trail beggars that I encountered on my hike. The raven was at the rest area at Indian Garden and was watching everybody's move. Squirrels are everywhere on the trails. At Three-Mile Resthouse a squirrel would not leave me alone. It was so bold that it even walked on my hand when I wasn't paying attention. This particular squirrel in the photo was actually eating a healthy meal of flower buds.

A view from high up on Bright Angel Trail looking down at a lower section of the trail. The green area are the trees of Indian Garden. The trail parallels the dry creek bed. The trail in the upper left that comes out of Indian Garden is the Plateau Point Trail. Bright Angel Trail actually goes out of view because it follows the Tapeats Narrows (which is the canyon on the north side of Indian Garden).

The end of the trail is in sight! The historic Kolb Studio is right by the Bright Angel trail head. The hike up from Phantom Ranch took me five and a half hours. Because of my conditioning and preparation I felt great and had a wonderful hike up. I am already planning to hike from rim to rim. The bottom photo is from near the end of the trail looking back down to the inner canyon; somewhere down in there is Phantom Ranch.
