Our goal is to produce healthy,happy kittens to become great companions & family members.So others can share in the joy of loving a Munchkin kitty.
Munchkins are in no way impaired by their short legs.
They can run & jump with the best of their longlegged siblings.
The shortlegs are a result of a genetic spontaneous mutation,that is a dominate gene.Munchkins are born into litters of 50/50 usually.Meaning half are long legged & half shortlegged.The shortlegged siblings are the only ones that possess the Munchkin gene.
History:
In the 1940's,in the U.K.,a veterinarian described several generations of shortlegged cats.This line seemed to
disappeared during WW2.In 1953 a shortlegged cat was seen in Stalingrad.However it wasn't until 1983,when a shortlegged cat,named Blackberry,was discovered by Sandra Hochenedel in Louisiana,that todays Munchkin breed was born.Blackberry's & subsequent litters consisted of 1/2 shortlegged & 1/2 longlegged kittens.
A son from one of Blackberry's litters,Toulouse,was given to Kay Lafrance,a friend of Hochenedel.It is from Blackberry & Toulouse that today's Munchkin breed is descended.
Munchkins are sometimes described as "ferret-like" in their playfulness,as they run,chase,& play w/toys.They also have a way of sitting up like a squirrel or rabbit,on their hind legs.A trait which gave the Stalingrad cat the name of "Stalingrad Kangaroo Cat"Because Munchkins maybe bred to a wide number of breeds,an individual cat's personality will depend on its inheritance.All-in-all,Munchkins can be described as loving,sociable,playful with a kitten-like personality.
