BLEEDING HEARTS AND FLOWERS

“No flowers
Near the gravestones, please.”

“All flesh is grass
It withers away
As a flower upon
The face of the Earth.”

“But, if you’ll notice,
The flesh we put underneath
All neat and tidy.
Flowers just die
They clutter up the place
Get blown about.
No, we cold-hearted custodians
Of parks and cemeteries
Quoting regulations
From such-and-such a rulebook
Can’t possibly allow it.
Spare us your mish-mush sentimentality
Oh, and,
Definitely,
Absolutely,
NO
Teddy-shaped gravestones
No photos
No hearts
No angels.
Stop moaning!
You should be glad
We allowed him
To be buried here at all.

Oh, so you want to
Dig him up, do you?
And move him to a place
That will allow flowers
Or teddy gravestones
Or angels
Or photos?
Fair enough.
Go ahead,
It’s your funeral -
HA HA HA HA HA!
Just our little joke.

"Come and
Dig him up
As soon as you like.”
