Billy Gaines Feb 17 1984 - June 18 2003
"Gaines, whose hometown is Ijamsville, Md., accepted a football scholarship to Pitt after a stellar career at Urbana High School. His team won 50 games in a row, a Maryland record. Just 5-feet and 170 pounds, Gaines caught the touchdown pass that won the 2001 Maryland state championship for Urbana. Across high-school career, he had 116 catches for 34 touchdowns. His coach, David Carruthers, called him his strongest player pound per pound, and one without fear. Last night [June 18, 2003] more than 300 people attended a 45-min prayer vigil that was held at the football field at Urbana High School." Pittsburgh post-gazette [full article here]

Billy Gaines was an amazingly superb football player, a muscular machine that was never boring to watch. His adamant determination to succeed was noticed on and off the field. And sitting next to him in a class, I got to know the sweet and funny kid inside. It's completely unbelievable how this tradegy could happen to someone such as our well-known and well-loved Billy, and impossible to start to imagine why. I can only trust that God in his supreme sovereignty is in control, that death is only the devil's 'sleight of hand' trick when Jesus holds the key to eternal life, and that hopefully we will meet Billy again in heaven. Until we do, please pray for Billy's family and friends ---- he will be greatly missed
"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." 2 Cor 4:17 NIV
"God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:4 NLT
"The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him sincerely. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cries for help and rescues them." Psalm 145:18-19 NLT
"As for God, his way is perfect. All the Lord's promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection." Psalm 18:30 NLT
"I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along." Psalm 40:1-2 NLT
As Rachel A. stated... "Billy... If you only knew what you meant to so many people, i dont think u realize it... i dont understand why it was your time! but i will ALWAYS love you... !"
