| Tadao Sawai (1973-1997) Great koto master and composer Tadao Sawai began playing koto at age of 10, and after graduating from the Tokyo University of Fine Arts in 1959 became a leader in the development of a new world for koto, becoming known as the foremost composer and perfromer of contemporary koto music. His very active recording and performing career brought him international acclaim. His expressive, stunning compositions continue to inspire musicians and audiences around the world. Kazue Sawai's performance have been immensely successful, especially her work with the 17-string bass koto, which she has played a key role in transforming from strictly an ensemble instrument to an important solo instrument. She has commissioned and performed works by a number of composers, and in 1999 debuted a concert with NHK Sympony in New York by composer Sofia Gubaidulina. Hikaru Sawai learned the foundation of koto from his father, Tadao Sawai, shakuhachi training from distinguished artist Katsuya Yokoyama, and flute lessons with Masao Yoshida, he took a turn away from tradition and in 1985 formed the rock band "Mephisto Pheles." With Sawai composing and playing guitar, the group gained a strong following. From1986, he was gradually drawn back into the world of koto through appearances in his father's all Japan concert series. In 1990, he accompanied his father and shakuhach great, Hozan Yamamoto on their North America tour, appearing on stage @Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. @New York Asian Society. In 1992 he received the 14th Ministry of Cultural Affairs Performing Arts Grand Prix Award for his composition "shaei". Today he continues with busy performance and composition schedules, working to bring the sound and enjoyment of the koto to a wider and wider audience. |
