Ice Out!!!...The words every freshwater fisherman waits patiently to hear every spring.
There are two times during the year that pass all too slowly. That period in the fall when
ice begins to form on the lake so you can't put your boat in, until the ice is thick enough
support ice fishing. The other time is that transformation period between winter and spring.
The ice is too thin to support ice fishing and you can't get your boat in the water.
Well the ice goes out on Winnipesaukee in early to mid April. Not a second too soon we put
our boat in the water and persue the ever elusive Landlocked Salmon.
Well we didn't exactly slaughter them but we managed to land one very nice salmon.
This beauty fell for a "modified" Joe's Smelt trolled on a fly rod. The weather conditions were
great for early season fishing. Temperatures reached the high seventies yet the water was just under 40 degrees.
We had a light wind that produced a light chop, no salmon fisherman complains about a light chop.
The sky was pretty clear, which can be a bit of a problem, but the trip was a success anyway you
look at it.
