A new documentary on minor-league baseball is about to hit public television across the nation. In The New Ball Game, a passionate fan of the bush leagues explores the impact of a team on the life and personality of several North American towns. Along the way, he meets a giant taco, a pig that takes baseballs to home plate, and a base-running toilet.
This bittersweet documentary looks at a threat to a slice of small-town Americana that's fast going the way of soda fountains and drive-in movies. It includes comments from Paul Molitor, Dave Stewart and Bob Uecker.
It is about survival of old ways in a hostile new age. It is about towns and fans fighting to keep something that's been part of their identity for more than a hundred years in some cases. It is about community.
