96th ANNUAL MIDNIGHT SUN GAME

What a unique baseball experience. At just 160 miles south of the Arctic Circle, on June 21st the Fairbanks "sunset" consists of nothing more than the sun just barely dipping below the northern horizon for a little while. The sky remains sufficiently lighted for a ballgame to be played without the use of artificial lighting. In this case it was a three and a half hour, thirteen-inning, 2-1 victory for the home team. My only regret was the afternoon started becoming overcast as game time approached so we didn't really get the full effect of the sunlit sky.

These photos are from Thursday, 6/21/01, 10:30 p.m. game when the Fairbanks Alaska Goldpanners hosted the North County Waves, a visiting team from Oceanside, CA. All of my original photos on this page are approximately one-quarter size. Netscape users can right-click and view-image to see the full-size images.
