Hello, Let me introduce myself. My name is Courtney Boston I am Miss Teen Jefferson County. I have spent my weekend watching the news and trying to think: What could I a 15 year old do to help the people of the Katrina? I have watched our President George Bush, the Army, National Guard, News Media, Red Cross they have been there, doing all they can to help the people and meet there basic needs. I thank them for their effort and there generosity. I feel we went from watching major human suffering to people who are trying to pick up the pieces. An animal lover I was so glad to see the ASPC and Humane Society moving in there to help relocate the animals there. I listen to stories of everyday people offering their homes, donating money, Dr. and Nurse volunteer to help the sick. I want to help!!

I am sitting here is my nice home with air, electric, watching TV, playing X-box, reading, studying for school, I have warm food and cold clean water. I can use the restroom, take a shower this has always been a given to me. Well, no longer I will never forget the stories nor the images and each day will have a new meaning to me and it should to every person in our country. Yet, I still want to help?

I have put some thought into what I could do to Help? I have watched the kids just like me have everything in there live turned upside down. I have spoke with some of my friends and we have all agreed we would like to do something but what? I want to help the kids. I want to give them a little something to call their own. For the next 2 to 6 months they will be in these shelters and what will they have to do with their time.

I would like to make a plea to the kids of our great county to give a shoebox filled with LOVE!! I thought of a shoebox because I know they cant have a lot of room in the shelter. I thought we could take a shoebox and fill it with items age appropriate, like a deck of cards, cross word puzzle, jump rope, a book to read, maybe a hair bow, lip gloss, facial towel, baby rattle, teething ring, maybe a CD player, football, baseball. Just something to give the kids of this hurricane some small token to call there own and to give them a little something to do while they wait in those shelter.

I have put thought into how to pull this off! I am sending you this letter because I am trying to get heard. I am going to call U-haul to try to get a truck. I will call on the schools to see if I can ask the kids for help. Then I will call the Red Cross or church organizations and ask them for there help getting these boxes filled with Love sent to the kids. My only reward is to see the kids have a moment and a small smile.

My parents and my family have agreed to help me and I know there is going to be more to this then just getting the Shoeboxes of Love. I will need to get Help from some companies around our County possibly. My Grandma told me the only way to get a job done is to get it started.

So if you can help me I would like to sit down and discuss my idea.

Thanks for your time,
Courtney Boston
