| Jonathan T. Talking back to an ad Different ads have different meanings in it. Some ads make a drawback to you saying that you must do this or you wouldnt be this way or if you dont do this, your life wouldnt be perfect. That has been a major problem with ads in the world. Advertisers are trying to get other people to buy their products so they could earn a lot of money. Advertisers think that money is everything in life. In almost all of the ads they show on magazines, television, fliers, billboards, and more dont even tell you the truth of buying the product. Some of the ads need the government to tell them what to do in order for them to tell part of the truth, but not the whole thing. An example is the ad Im gonna show you. In this ad, not everything is basic. All you could see is the cigarette called, Basic and the easy to make autumn centerpiece. That hardly says anything in the ad. The ad has big red letters on the top that says, The best things in life are basic. This is just telling you that everything in life that is basic are the best, but smoking isnt really that basic and is definitely not the best. Smoking can cause many harmful things to your body. The best things in life arent basic. They are saying that smoking is good for you because it is a basic thing you do in your life. Things that are basic arent the best. They are trying to de-sensitize people and saying that you must smoke Basic cigarettes or your life wouldnt be the best. A lot of people who sees these ads dont know how highly addictive cigarettes are because it contains nicotine in it. In the ad, Basic is a good thing in life. They are saying that smoking is a good thing in life. Only in the bottom of the ad do they show the surgeons general warning. Pollay, Ibid (1996) quotes, What you see is the opposite of what you get. We see images of independence, not the reality of addiction. We see pictures of health, while the reality is too often disease and death. That shows to prove that smoking doesnt mean that you would look cool or you are the best. It just means that youre a big fat jerk! The scene is framed in a large view of the plant and the cigarette. Thats probably the most important thing in the ad, but I think the cigarette is the most important thing in the ad because it show the cigarette that already has been smoked by a person already and still has a lot of cigarettes left in the persons table. The camera is shooting the ad in a low angle because the cigarettes appear to be larger than the real one and that the flower appears to be much bigger than the original size. There are actually no people in the ad. They only show the cigarettes and the flower. I dont think there are computerized effects except for the flower image. I dont get how they could make the flower that quickly and efficiently. There is no music in the ad, also. The power of the ad is that smoking is good because its basic and its an everyday thing. Its a basic thing you could do each day. The problem is that the ad wants you to smoke their cigarettes. Thats not really a good thing because it would definitely harm your body and it ought to kill you. If the rate of this keeps happening, the population of the world would shorten and shorten even more. Nova Scotia Department of Health (2001) quotes, at a high school in Buenos Aires, a woman wearing khaki safari gear and driving a jeep with the yellow Camel logo hands out free cigarettes to 15- and 16-year-olds on their lunch break. This comes to show you that the problem with cigarettes is that they are for free sometimes. That could let the people have a chance to try out the cigarette. If they liked it, chances are that the person would get addicted to it for the rest of their lives. Ads are trying to make you believe that smoking isnt a really bad thing, its a basic routine or your everyday life. Also, the message is the same thing and that you should always smoke because its a daily thing in life. The emotions of the ad is trying to say to you dont be mad, get glad with the basic cigarettes. They are trying to make you happy because smoking isnt a bad thing to do in life. They dont want you to believe that smoking is a very bad thing to do. The people who the ad targets are adults because adults have jobs and most adults smoke cigarettes. Adults usually make plants and teenagers dont make plants just for fun. I know because it has been known in many everyday lives in the world. Some audiences might think that smoking isnt a good part of your everyday lives and youre not suppose to smoke at all or certain problems might happen to you. Maybe some people might think that smoking is good for you because they usually smoke. They smoke probably daily. They also might think that smoking makes you happy or doesnt make you have that much stress when you do work or something. This ad is running because smoking isnt illegal, so they are free to do whatever they want. The only thing they cant do is make their audience children or people under 18 years old. They also allow the company to print the ad because the advertisers want to earn money for their own free will. I dont know exactly how long this ad has been running for, but this is the only smoking ad I could find. I looked at other magazines, but couldnt find the same ad again. They hope that the image of the people looking at the ad would find that smoking isnt a bad thing and its apart of your life everyday and every night. They want you to think that smoking isnt such a bad thing, it could be a good thing sometimes if you think about it. I dont think they have any problems about themselves but I think their problems are that they should tell us why not to smoke and all possible dangers from smoking. In my mind, smoking ads must be stopped because it is killing so many people in the world. Nova Scotia Department of Health quotes, tobacco companies are also supporting 'alternative press', offering money to clubs for their own advertising in exchange for tobacco material to be displayed in the club, and sponsoring awards and contests advertised in magazines. This means that tobacco companies give money to different clubs and contests so their cigarette brand would be posted up and most definitely get attracted by the people who are there. Second-hand smoke is also a problem. If a person smokes, and theres people around the person, chances are that the people who are near the person who is smoking would catch second-hand smoke. Second-hand smoke is almost as dangerous as smoking itself. I think smoking companies must stop making cigarettes because a lot of people are getting addicted and people are dying of it. That is just bad. Would you want to die of smoking or second-hand smoking? Heh I dont think so. |
