*7th July '01, The Jug of Ale with Distophia and Baxxter - The 'Family's first ever gig and it was okay. Lots of people were in a bit of a bad mood with them because a load of underage looking friends turned up and so the upsatirs bar had to be closed for SEF to play. They proved they have a lot of charisma anyway and finished by poking each other with their guitars in the most camp fashion you can imagine. This monumentous occasion was captured on tape but some of their best songs they didn't play...PICS
*18th August '01, Scruffy Murphys with Autolight and Jinja - Autolight were the 'actual' headliners that night but because drummer boy Tom had to leave early they played first which meant SEF got to play last. The banter was good that night! The music was good as well and the 'Family proved that they are actually pretty good. There's a tape of this gig but some of it sounds kind of bad...PICS

*1st Sept. '01, Cotteridge Park Live and Unpaid festival thing - A dark day for the Elevators by all accounts. They managed three songs in half an hour because Bryn talked so much. Also the last gig Tim Grunt played with SEF. There's a cd of all the bands from this but the SEF songs on it are pretty crappy...PICS
*29th Sept. '01, Scruffy Murphys with Watermuff and the Reverends - SEF's best gig to date. Their line-up was nicely bolstered by a mysterious bass player who wore a big orange anorak and a paper bag over his head. They played a lot of good new stuff and rocked the house...PICS
*15th November '01, Scruffy Murphies with the Rub Club, Black Fish and Distophia - Everything that could have gone wrong that night did. Guitars wouldn't tune, the sound was awful (you couldn't even hear Bryn), the barman heckled them and they had to cut the set short. The set wasn't without its momenets though - Bryn's retorts shamed that barman so much he wanted to beat him up and the bassist was unmasked as David who rocked most righteously. So it wasn't too bad.
*7th December '01, Scruffy Murphies with Watermuff and Season - A good gig. Bryn went wild on the mic, accidently hitting Ralph and almost breaking two lights and the mic itself. Good stuff. David rocked out big time and Ralph wore some gnarly sunglasses and had a bit of a camp fight with Bryn at the end. The first two songs were caught on tape, but then the batteries ran out.
*5th Jan. '02, The Hibernain, 'Return of the Lo-FI' all-dayer with Baxxter, the Starries, The Regualrs, etc - The Elevators played a good set but it seemed like a lot of people were waiting for the big bands like the Regulars to come on. They got a pretty good reception and Bryn moved around like Michael Stipe but it was marred by Bryn's unusually poor banter which wasn't as funny/weird as usual. The guy on the door said he liked them and it made a nice change to Scruffy Murphies so it was a good day out for the 'Family...PICS
*18th January '02, Scruffy Murphies with Autolight and Halfcharm - This was the last of SEF's 'residency' at Scruffys and was a weird gig. It was the return of Autolight and Halfcharm were headlining so the place was packed. Bryn fell asleep before they went on and only woke up while they were plugging guitars in. The mix was pretty bad so Bryn had to shout which meant he sounded a bit like Julian Cassablancas which wasn't so great. They were pretty good though plus Ralph had an Aladdin t-shirt and David borrowed a mean nu-metal bass. Bryn told a disgusting story about a sesame seed he found under his foreskin once and they ended everything by rocking out massively . Best of all though was the very end: during the last song, 'Some Were Devils', Bryn screamed in such a high pitch it shorted out the mics and he had to shout the end of the song with Tom singing along in the audience. 'We killed Scruffys' Ralph said happily but sadly they didn't.
*23rd February '02, The Flapper with Stone Free and Soni-Quella - SEF were going to be opening for Baxxter and Mezzablast but they both had to pull out so SEF got to headline. Not only did they rock their best yet but Bryn's banter was funny and David got stuck at the top of a stack of crates he climbed. It was Andrew's birthday so cake was shared with the audience. Bryn rocked his guitar out of action by the third song and they ended by playing frisbee with records and smashing them good during the closer, Some Were Devils. It ended with Bryn wearing one of the record cases on his head, looking like the Pope. Most of the event was captured on video by the able hands of Richard Pye but the batteries ran out before the end because we spent so long messing around backstage.
*23rd March '02, the Hibernian Indie all-dayer with The Epics, Halfcharm, etc - Lame. SEF sounded really empty and lifeless which was a shame because Ralph was rocking out the most he has yet and David put on a fine performance, chatting to friends amongst the audience and hiding in the backstage room while still playing. Bryn's onstage antics were cheesy and nobody got the keyboard and guitar version of Tom Grant's old song 'Amacord' that they started with, but at least the last minute was good when SEF and equipment went flying everywhere and Bryn hurt his ankle.
*7th June '02, The Flapper with Baxxter and the Evangelistas - A good gig, some even said their best yet. It ended with whirlwind bassing and Bryn throwing drums and chairs on Ralph which is never a bad thing. The wildest of times...
*7th Aug. '02, The Jug of Ale with Fear of String and Distophia - Andrew couldn't make it to this gig (the official explanation was that he was in a horrible car crash though some nasty rumours went round that he was just in Cornwall, visiting relatives), but as a Jug gig is too sweet to pass up SEF played as a three piece, swapping instruments, with Distophia Tom joining them for one song. They used a Hammond organ and a light-up Merry Christmas sign stolen from the skip outside, and they even played a cover of that fine country standard 'King of the Road'. It was all over in about 15 minutes, but it was a really good gig.
*27th Sept. '02, The Flapper with Blisst and 35 Seconds - A reasonable set from SEF but way more static than usual. They played a good new song and came up with the goods at the end of the set - Ralph sat down to play amongst the audience while Bryn did 'a Quantum Leap' and danced with a crate on his head.
*6th Oct. '02, The Flapper with Fig Tree, In These Days and Urco - The sound was bad, Bryn's guitar sounded twangy, and the playing was real loose. The fact the organisers (Ralph's friends Loser Promotions) thought they were drunk pretty much sums up the slickness of the set. Some songs still sounded good though, despite the problems, and the banter was top-draw stuff (burlesque houses and VD clinics were the subjects). SEF drew a very reasonable crowd for a Sunday night - the audience was notable for including a dandy, a drunkard, Bryn's dad and a guy called Raphael.
*28th December '02, The Flapper Christmas all-dayer with Yellobelly, etc - The sound was bad and Andrew's snare sounded 'like a cow being whipped' which helped ruin a new song called 'Structural Damage at No. 53' which was meant to be the high point of the set, but SEF managed to do good despite this jazz. Bryn was on top form, spewing out the banter and getting the audience to join in on one song, 'Vestibule', turning a Flapper gig into an arena rock show for about a minute. David sang sweet, sweet backing vocals and Ralph's dad said Andrew's drumming was 'steady throughout'. And Ralph's playing was pretty hot as ever, even when he was playing his guitar with a pillar. It ended with them throwing themselves and their equipment across the stage which is always good. Good stuff.
