Themes & Curriculum : Wild Animals/Noah's Ark


Theme: Wild Animals/Noah's Ark
Based on the book "Noah's Ark" by Jan Brett

Goal:
Through exploring the theme children will discover different kinds of wild animals, what they eat, the sounds they make and how they lived on a big boat. Through their senses the smells, feeling and sight of animals, hay and salt water. 

Science: 
Feels and sounds of wild animals: Construct a feely box with bird feathers, sheep wool, other animals hair or skins and hay. Record the sounds of the wild animals in the zoo. Children will observe the different sounds and kinds of hair and bedding wild animals have.

Listening: Children will listen to the teacher and follow her directions for the activities.
Writing: Children will keep a journal to record what each animal sound is when they hear it and the different kinds of fur and bedding they feel in the feely box.
Speaking: Children will discuss their fur, sounds and bedding observations.
Reading: Children will help the teacher make and read vocabulary words from the story. Ark, rain, rainbow, big, middle-sized and small animals, flying animals, swimming animals, crowded, jumbled and many others.


Social Studies: 
Field trips to the wild animal sanctuary and the zoo.

Writing: Children will help the teacher write questions the children would like answered about wild animals and how they live. Children will write thank you notes to chaperones and the people at the animal sanctuary and the zoo.
Listening: Children will listen to the information given by the tour guides.
Speaking: Children will ask their questions about the animals.
Reading: Children will read their thank you notes to the class.


Language Arts: 
Children will re-tell the story

Listening: Children will listen to the story as the teacher tells it and interact.
Writing: Children will draw what their favorite part of the story was. 
Reading: Teacher will read the children's pictures to them.
Speaking: Children will tell about their favorite part of the story.


Math: 
Puzzles out of coloring book and magazine pictures of wild animals.

Listening: Children will listen to the teacher on how to put the puzzle together.
Writing: Children will write the kind of animal on the puzzle in their journal.
Reading: Children will read the kinds of animals from the puzzles they made.
Speaking: Children will speak about how they liked doing the puzzles and other ways to make puzzles.


Music: 
Sing the song "The Animals on the Ark Go..."

Listening: Children will listen to the teachers directions on how the song goes.
Writing: Children and teacher will write out the words to the song on a piece of large lined chart paper.
Reading: Children will read the words to the song off the chart paper. 
Speaking: Children will imitate the sounds the animals make.


Dramatic Play:
Ark and animals set up.

Listening: Children will listen to teacher on how to make a big ark out of a box.
Writing: Children will write where each animal should be in the ark and how they should be cared for.
Reading: Children will read what they wrote on how the animals should live and be cared for on the ark.
Speaking: Children will speak about what they learned.


Art: 
Wild animal mobiles. Cut pictures from magazines of wild animals and hang them from branches.

Listening: Children will listen to the teacher’ directions on how to make their mobile. 
Writing: Children will write the names of each animal on the back of each animal.
Reading: Children will read the names of each animal they have on their mobile.
Speaking: Children will tell the sound each animal on their mobile makes.


Health and Nutrition: 
Recipe for cut out animal crackers

Listening: Children will listen to directions on how to make the cookies and kitchen safety.
Writing: Children will write in their journals what they think the animals liked to eat.
Reading: Children will help the teacher read the recipe written in pictures for easy reading.
Speaking: Children will speak about what each different kind of animal eats.


Sensory:
Sand and plastic wild animals in sensory table.

Listening: Children will listen to a recording of animal sounds and pick the animal in the sensory table.
Writing: Children will write about the kinds of animal and how they are the same and different.
Speaking: Children will speak about what they think different animals may eat.
Reading: Children will read their lists on the different kinds of animals.
