Themes & Curriculum : Infant/Toddler Music Curriculum
Melissa and I did our theme unit with toddlers at "A Wonder World Learning Center". We went into the classroom and the teacher introduced us to the children as college students. The children were very happy to see us. We started out by Melissa putting her box of instruments on the table and telling the toddlers to each choose one and try it out. The children each took an instrument and had no trouble figuring out how they worked. The few that did I took aside and showed them so they were able to do it and not hitting tables and other children with them. After each child tried out their instrument Melissa led them around the room and they had a little marching parade then she had them each switch so they had a new instrument to try.I read the children a book called "Musicanimals". The book was a flip book so when I opened each flap the children told me what the animal was. They loved the book and were really involved as I made it interesting changing my voice to the kind of animal and letting them guess the animal it was. The children knew all of the animals in the book I was surprised. I did a stick puppet finger play called KITTY (sung like "BINGO"). The children took turns holding and waving their puppet as we sang the first verse. We did the song 4 times so each child would have a turn with a puppet. We started out with 14 puppets but left with 10, so I think the children really enjoyed it. Melissa told the children they were going to make their own instruments. She showed them a paper plate tambourine. We helped the children make their instrument and then we let them try them out and march around with them. We had fun with the children and learned that the children loved music and really enjoyed us.
