Empty spaces - what are we living for
Abandoned places - I guess we know the score
On and on
Does anybody know what we are looking for
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line
Does anybody want to take it anymore
The show must go on
The show must go on, yeah
Inside my heart is breaking
My makeup may be flaking
But my smile still stays on
Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance
Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on
Does anybody know what we are living for?
--Queen,
The Show Must Go On
Where was I? I forgot
The point that I was making
I said if I was smart that I would
Save up for a piece of string
And a rock to wind the string around.
Everbody wants a rock to wind a piece of string around.
Throw the crib door wide
Let the people crawl inside
Someone in this town
Is trying to burn their playhouse down.
They want to stop the ones who want
A rock to wind a string around
But everybody wants a rock to wind a piece of string around.
--They Might Be Giants, We Want a Rock
Try not to think about what might have been
Cause that was then
And we have taken different roads
We can't go back again
There's no use givin' in
Cause we'll never know
What might've been.
Its a world where the dogs eat the dogs
Where they kill for the bones in the street,
And God in his heaven, he don't interfere
Cause he's dead, as the stiffs at me feet
I raise my eyes to see the heavens,
And only the moon looks down
The harvest moon shines down...
--Les Miserables
Pontius Pilate came to our town
Up to the dockyards to see the picket line
We asked him to help, but he just turned around
He's the leader of the union now.
Leader of the union, all of our questions he ignores
He washed his hands and he dreamt of his reward
A seat in the House of Lords
--Chumbawamba, One By One
Take all the trees, put em in a tree museum.
And then charge all the people 25 bucks just to see em...
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got til its gone,
We take paradise, and put up a parking lot.
Big Yellow Taxi
My son turned 10 just the other day,
Said "thanks for the ball, now c'mon let's play!
Will you teach me to throw?" I said "not today,
I've got a lot to do," he said "that's ok"
And he walked away, his smile never dimmed, he said
"I'm going to be like you, Dad,
You know I'm going to be like you."
And the cat's in the cradle,
And the silver spoon, Little Boy Blue,
And the Man in the Moon,
When you coming home dad, I don't know when
But we'll get together then dad, you know we'll have a good time then...
I've long since retired and my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
"I'd like to see you, if you don't mind"
He said "I'd love to Dad, if I could find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking you Dad, it's been real nice talking to you."
And as I hung up the phone it occured to me
He'd grown up just like me, my boy was just like me.
--Harry Chapin, Cats in the Cradle
You used to think that it was so easy,
But you're trying, you're trying now.
One more year and then you'll be happy,
But you're crying, you're crying now.
--Jerry Somebody
When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring becomes The Rose
--Bette Midler, The Rose
When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all.
I'm on your side.
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
--Simon & Garfunkle, Bridge Over Troubled Water
Marlene watches from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As she records the rise and fall
Of every soldier passing.
But the only soldier now is me,
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think its called my destiny
That I am changing.
--Suzanne Vega, Marlene on the Wall
If I listened long enough to you
I'd find a way to believe that its all true
Knowing that you lied straight faced while I cried
Still I look to find a reason to believe.
If I gave you time to change my mind
I'd find a way just to leave the past behind
Someone like you makes it hard to live without somebody else
Someone like you makes it easy to give everything about myself.
--Rod Stewart
Broke into the old apartment
This is where we used to live
Broken glass, broke and hungry
broken hearts and broken bones
This is where we used to live
Why did they pave the lawn?
Why did they change the locks?
Why did I have to break in,
I only came here to talk.
This is where we used to live
Only memories, fading memories
Blending into dull tableaux
I want them back.
--Barenaked Ladies
The Old Apartment
Drink with me to days gone by
Can it be you fear to die?
Will the world remember you when you fall?
Can it be your death means nothing at all?
Is your life just one more lie?
Drink with me to days gone by
To the life that used to be
At the shrine of friendship, never say die
Let the wine of friendship never run dry
Here's to you and here's to me.
--Les Miserables
How do you leave the past behind
When it keeps finding ways to get to your heart?
It reaches way down deep
And tears you inside out
Til you're torn apart, RENT
How can you connect in an age
Where strangers, landlords, lovers,
Your own blood cells betray?
What binds the fabric together
When the raging, shifting winds of change
Keep ripping away?
Draw a line in the sand, and then make a stand.
Use your camera to spar, use your guitar.
When they act tough, you call their bluff.
We're not gonna pay last year's rent"
   --Rent, Rent
Don't talk of love
Well, I've heard the word before
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumber
Of feelings that have died
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock, I am an island.
--Simon & Garfunkle, I Am a Rock
Why can't you see my need for forgiveness
The truth and the lies so confused as one
I can't believe in anything sacred
When I don't believe in anything.
I am alone, locked in my memories
There's nowhere left for me to hide.
But I am not real
I've made all I am with lies.
--Stabbing Westward, Why
"Solitude stands in the doorway
I'm struck once again by Her black silhouette
By Her long cool stare and Her silence
I suddenly remember each time we've met
And She says "I've come to set a twisted thing straight"
And She says "I've come to lighten this dark heart"
And She takes my wrist, I feel Her imprint of fear
And I say "I've never thought of finding you here"
I turn to the crowd as they're watching
They're sitting all together in the dark in the warm
I wanted to be in there among them
I see how their eyes are gathered into one
And She turns to me with her hand extended
Palm is split with a flower with a flame."
--Suzanne Vega, Solitude Standing
Well she wants to be the queen
Then she thinks about her scene
Pulls her hair back as she screams
"I don't really wanna be the queen."
   --Meet Virginia, Train
I asked Henry, my bartending friend
Why it is that there are those kind of men
And he said, You're lucky to even know me
You're lucky to be alive
You're lucky to be drinking here for free
Cause I'm a sucker for your lucky pretty eyes.
Do you wanna be a polyester bride?
Do you wanna hang your head and die?
Do you wanna find alligator cowboy boots they just put on sale?
Do you wanna flap your wings and fly away from here?
--Liz Phair, Polyester Bride
You go on ahead, honey
You have a good time there
You make me feel funny
I'm no ordinary lover or friend.
Its the death in our love
That has brought us here.
And it goes round in circles
One night is lovely the next is brutal
And you and me are in way over our heads
You hold me and I can't feel you
We hurt but we smile
I promise I'll make it back
When the summer has warmed me awhile.
--Liz Phair
The heart may freeze or it can burn
The pain will ease if I can learn
There is no future, there is no past
I live this moment as my last
There's only us, there's only this
Forget regret
Or life is yours to miss
No other road, no other way
No day but today.
  --Another Day, Rent
Are we really gonna sleep through another century
While the rich profit off our blood?
True it may take some doing to see this undoing through
But in my humble opinion, here's what i suggest we do:
Open fire on Hollywood. Open fire on MTV.
Open fire on NBC and CBS and ABC.
Open fire on the NRA
And all the lies they told us along the way
Open fire on each weapons manufacturer
While he's giving head to some republican senator
And if I hear one more time
About a fool's right to his tools of rage,
I'm gonna take all my friends, and move to Canada.
And die of old age.
--Ani Difranco, To The Teeth
I learned the truth at 17
That love was meant for beauty queens
And brown-eyed girls with clear-skinned smiles
Who marry young and then retire...
And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say come dance with me
And murmured vague obscenities...
--Janis Ian, At Seventeen
I'd rather laugh with the sinners
Than cry with the saints;
The sinners are much more fun
Darlin' only the good die young.
--Billy Joel, Only the Good Die Young
Hold on to 16 as long as you can
Changes come around real soon
Make us women and men
--John Mellincamp, Life Goes On
