It was a lovely and sunny day
and finally she was back in the city she had missed for so long . Sligo ! It
wasn’t surely as prestigious as Dublin could have been compared to it but for
Kate it has always had a special meaning to her . Maybe because 4 years before
she’d spent her first holiday there far from her parents ! It wasn’t a
proper holiday though . She was there as an au pair for a lovely family , the
Feehilys . She baby sat for their last child , Colin , and also gave a helping
hand with the housework . It lasted two months and then she had to come back
Italy for her exam . “ Promise us you’ll come and visit us again after
you’ve finished with your exam ! We’d be more than happy to see you again
and there will always be a place here for you “ Mr. Feehily said . “ I will
definitely ! For me you’ve been like a family
and you made me feel so welcome ! “ They always treated her like a
daughter even if she was working for them and she had been so lucky to have
worked for such kind and simple people . During that time she especially made
friends with their elder son , Mark . He was only 2 years younger than her with
2 beautiful blue eyes and they had a lot in common especially the love for
nature and music . And he was very shy and kind but he had always been like a
brother for her . Mark came to her with a red rose and said : “ Thanx for all
the brilliant times we had together ! Promise you’ll keep in touch with me and
our friendship will never die no matter the miles between us ! “ Tears were
pouring down her face … why did she have to leave a special friend , that what
he was for her , and come back to a city where she had nearly no friends and the
few she had were only abusing her ?! “ Mark all we had during this summer will
always be in my heart ! I’ll be back soon ! I promise ! “ . After that they
hugged like there was no tomorrow . Unfortunately for various reason she
couldn’t came back there before but she and Mark kept in touch as they
promised and their friendship grew stronger even if their only contacts were
through phone , letter and e-mails . Sometimes she had the feeling she was
becoming more than a friend to him but she didn’t want to ruin that special
relationship . He had always been there for her and she knew that no matter what
she had an angel who cared for her . Suddenly they lost contacts and that
affected her life incredibly ! She lost weight , stopped studying … all she
could think was him and their friendship ! She was so sure she couldn’t have
said something wrong or broke his heart ! Maybe he had found another friend and
maybe she wasn’t so special for him , as she thought . Things changed
progressively . She got better and finished her studies . She even found many
jobs . Working was the only thing that didn’t make her think of him . But when
she was home alone sadness and loneliness returned to haunt her and every time
she saw his pressies or their pics together or saw a leaflet on Ireland it was
even worse . One day her boss , Mr. Franchini , called her in his office . She

and they had been to many holidays together when she was a little child . Her

knew what she had to do .That was her chance . She knew she was going against
her fate but she had to know the truth . If Mark really had forgotten her he

She
called a taxi and told him to take her to her hotel . On the way she looked out
of the window and saw a boy and a girl sitting on the steps of a fountain . She
closed her eyes and her memory brought her back to a day when she and Mark stood
in the same fountain ! They had a lot of fun that day . They always did . She
couldn’t believe how he could have forgotten all the joy and happiness they
had shared together ! “ Mind if I turn the radio on ? “ the taxi driver
asked . “ Oh no please I love music !!! “ . He turned on the radio and she
heard a beautiful song sung by what seemed like an angel ! . “ ‘Cos you

Oh it’s soo sweet ! Do you have a clue who sings it ? “ “ Ever heard of
Westlife ? They’re a local boyband ! “ “ Oh I’m sorry but I’ve
haven’t heard of them back in Italy actually ! “ How could she ? She’s
been in a total state of depression and sincerely had no time to worry about a
boyband ! “ Are they famous ? “ “ Well this is their first ever single
called “ Swear It Again “ and it went straight in at number 1 in the first
week of its release ! “ “ Wow “ she thought ! But all she could think of
was Mark . She needed to see him again and talk to him and ask him why he’d
stopped calling her . The journey lasted only 15 mins. but she didn’t pay
attention to what the taxi man was telling her . He blabbered on about this
boyband for all the journey ! Who cares ! Not even if he talked about U2 or The
Corrs ! . They won’t last . And what does this band have that is so special ?
she thought ! If only she knew the whole story !!!
She
arrived at the hotel and after a shower she decided to take a walk before dinner
. It was 6 in the afternoon and there were a nice breeze . She eventually went
to Hazelwood . That place was so magic . Kate and Mark had great times there .
They used to spent hours there just chilling out and watching nature . Those
were days ! She enjoyed the crunching sound of the fallen leaves under her feet
and the laughter of three children playing around the park . Kate knew it was a
short holiday . She wouldn’t be staying there more than a week . She had a
feeling that her friendship with Mark was really over and had to come back to
her sad life without him in it .
“
Life can be so cruel “ she thought and sighed . But at the same time she
wanted to take a well earned rest and make the best out of it in all cases . If
she really decided to ignore her his business ! Just as she was thinking this a
thunder roared in the sky and she came back to the hotel .
The
next morning Kate woke up really early . She took a map and head towards
Mark’s house . She didn’t want to take a bus or anything . She knew it
wasn’t very far from the hotel and it was a sunny day and a good walk
wouldn’t do her any harm . Eventually she got lost ! Brilliant ! I’m in a
foreign city all alone and I just got myself lost! She thought to herself !
Luckily there was a bar so she decided to go in and call a taxi . She didn’t
knew that that bar would have changed her life . Forever ! Kate entered the bar
and ordered a Coke . She picked up the phone and called the taxi . Or well that
was what she had planned to do ! But the barman told her it was broke !
Fantastic ! “ What else could go wrong for me ? “ she sighed . A guy hidden
under a baseball cap turned to her and with a soft Irish accent offered Kate the
use of his mobile . She didn’t want to but there wasn’t anything else for
her to do . She took the phone and with out of the corner of her eyes she saw
the guy take off the cap and sit down . After 5 seconds she heard a deep breath
. “ Oh my God ! Kate ! It’s really you ?! “ Great now a perfect stranger
in a foreign city was trying to pull her ! But wait a sec. ! How on earth did he
knew her name ?! Kate cautiously raised her eyes and saw two big blue eyes and
the most shining smile ever ! “ Oh my God ! Mark ?! “ Was that a dream ? She
waited and searched for him for ages and now he was in front of her ! The time
had arrived . He was there . Now she could have asked him all the questions that
tortured her for so long . But she wasn’t able to say a single sound . He kept
on smiling like a child on Christmas day and she felt that all her theories
about him were completely and utterly wrong !

You’ve been the most important person in my life for almost 3 years … “ at
that time she started crying thinking of all the time she was waiting by the

and after a lot of occasional jobs I finally found a steady job as a secretary .
I love my job and it’s really rewarding . And I have to use English a lot and

she paid him a compliment on him . But that was a thing she did too . And that

heard the whirring of the roller blind being lifted and had the rays of the sun

was looking out the window . All the trees were in bloom . She also saw a
wonderful peach tree . She still had 3 days left and she just wouldn’t wanna
go away ! This was her place . Never in a million she would have left ! Mark

time was over ! Yep the two weeks just flew away and Kate had to go home . Will

These were the questions she kept asking herself like a torture while she was
having her shower . She didn’t remember it was her last week there ( neither
had Shane ! ) she was too excited to think about that . She had to go away . She
asked herself : How will I live without his smile ? She began to cry . Mark
