Drop Down Menus in Excel
- Click on cell A41. Type "Lesson 5".
- Click on cell A42. Type "Sectors".
- Click on cell A43. Type "Cable and Satellite".
- Click on cell A44. Type "Chips".
- Click on cell A45. Type "Computers/Peripherals".
- Click on cell A46. Type "Contract Manufacturers".
- Click on cell A47. Type "Internet".
- Click on cell A48. Type "Networking".
- Click on cell A49. Type "Software".
- Click on cell A50. Type "Storage".
- Click on cell A51. Type "Tech Blue Chips".
- Click on cell A52. Type "Telecom".
- Click on cell A53. Type "Telecom Global".
- Click on cell A55. Type "Wireless".
- Click on the column header "C" so the whole column is highlighted.
- Right click and select "Insert."
- In cell C2, type "Sector".
- Highlight from cell C3 to cell C12.
- Go up to the "Data" menu. Select "Validation."
- In the "Settings" tab and the "Validation Criteria" box, find and select "List" from the "Allow" drop down menu.
- After "Allow", find the "Source" area.
- Click on the white box with the little red arrow to the right of the white area below "Source". This should take you back into the spreadsheet. A new, smaller window called "Data Validation".
- Highlight cells A43:A55.
- The "Data Validation" window should have =$A$43:$A$55 in it.
- Click on the gray box with the red arrow in the "Data Validation" window.
- You should be back in the "Data Validation" window on the "Settings" tab.
- Click OK to exit "Data Validation".
- Click on cell C3. A down arrow should now appear. Click on the arrow to see the drop down menu.
- Select the appropriate category for each company. Use CNN/Money to find the sector for each of your companies.
- If a company is listed in two or more categories, just pick one, it doesn't matter which.
- Important: Notice that all of your columns beyond column "B" have shifted to the left. This will change some of the "constants" in your formulas in the future (i.e. "Purchased" is now in "F", not "E".
