Lands, Memorial Tax
31     MEMORIALS.... The British Crown levied a tax on all lands which had been granted and the returns had to be made by the present owner of the land... The tax returns had to be made in Charleston....often the owner would have a neoghbor enroute to Charleston to make this tax return...Only one return was made and that good for ten years when the tax expired.
The following Memorial tax returns are in Index.
Andrew McClelland  1
Archibald McClelland 2
Elizabeth McClelland 1
Francis McClelland 1
John McClelland 2
Robert McClelland 2
Samuel McClelland 2
Archibald McClellan 8*

Hugh McClelland  1
Margaret McClelland 1
Rose McClelland 1
William McClelland 3

Archibald McClelland likely made returns on some lands he had bought since when compared  with #28 Archibald did not have 10 grants....In #28, in case a grant was made and no tax return listed, it is likely the owner had sold the land or had died or else if a woman she had married and made the return under a different surname....I abstracted a few of these returns,,. "8-169" refers to book 8 page 169 etc
