A view from the back of the apartment in Pune.  A typical Indian style home in pictured (paster color).  As shown, the typical house is constructed with a flat roof and a balconty.  This common design is so popular because of its advantages.  For example, many people use the roof to hang their clothes for drying in the generally hot temperature this is quite effective.  This ritual is very often seen because washing and drying machines are seldom used because of high water and electricity costs.  Another advantage to this design is that it is less costly compared to the triangle roofed housed common in the United States.
