Igor Radulov

History

Hailing from the Yekaterinburg region of Alexei Yashin and Nikolai Khabibulin, Radulov made the tough transition of leaving home at 13 to play in the Yaroslav Hockey School program. In hopes of a pro career, he went and played for the OHL Mississauga Ice Dogs to acclimate him to North America.

Ranked 65th by Central Scouting Bureau in his draft year.

Talent Analysis

Strengths: Effortless skater with good balance. Can outright fly and still handle the puck. He is able to not only control the puck in motion and is hard to knock off the puck. He is known as a excellent passer with soft hands to maneuver through traffic, pass and shoot. Is unafraid of corner work, and barrels into the wall to get pucks.
Weaknesses: Has not shown consistent playmaking ablity at this time. Can score but needs to use his teammates to his advantage.
Future

The Hawks extensively scouted Radulov and see pro winger written all over him. Will be given every opportunity to develop into an NHL regular with time. He was brought in to the 2001 July prospects camp and turned a few heads as he put on a scoring seminar in the 3 on 3 competitions. Still far from the NHL, and it showed in the Hawk exhibition games in which he played, for even though his choppy step got him to the play quickly, his balance didn't help him stay on his feet against other opposing NHL players and farmhands.

In his rookie OHL season he maintained a point per game pace, and hopefully he will be able to learn the little things necessary to prepare him for his development as first and AHLer and then eventually, and NHLer.

The end of the OHL season with the dismal Ice Dogs has enabled the Blackhawks to promote Radulov to their AHL Norfolk affiliate and a pro contract. He will be brought along slowly as was Mark Bell. His call up at the end of 2003 exposed his lack of commitment to defense while showing off his offensive prowess.
