History

The Los Angeles Kings selected Denis with the 18th overall pick in the 2002 NHL draft, making him the first Russian defender selected.

Denis Grebeshkov started playing in Torpedo Yaroslavl’s system and played his full season for Torpedo’s junior affiliate Torpedo 2 in 1998-99. He also joined the Russian National ’83 Team during that same year. He continued to play for the Russian National ’83 Team the following year and became one of it’s top defensemen.

2001-02: earned a spot on Lokomotiv Yaroslavl’s main roster. He played on Lokomotiv’s third and fourth defensive pairings. This was an especially important accomplishment considering the fact that Yaroslavl won the Russian National Championship and was considered to have one of Russia’s strongest defenses. Even though Denis received limited ice time totaling no more 10 minutes a game, he still gained a lot of experience playing and practicing with veterans, former NHLers.

2002-03: continued his development with Yaroslav, splitting time between the 1st and 2nd defensive pairings. Helped Team Russia to a gold medal in the U20 WJC in 2002.

2003-04: playing for Manchester of the AHL after impressing at training camp. Suffered a wrist injury (Dec. 1) that required surgery and will miss 6 weeks. Came back from the injury to earn himself a brief call-up with the Kings. Was solid on defense and showed great maturity in his time in Manchester.

Talent Analysis

Denis Grebeshkov is a solid defenseman with a promising offensive upside. He possesses impressive speed and great coordination. One of Denis’s most impressive qualities is his work ethic. He fears no one – moves well through traffic and does not hesitate to mix it up with anybody – no matter the size or experience. Denis also has no fear of a flying puck and is one of the leading shot blockers on Lokomotiv’s roster. A Russian hockey journalist from Yaroslavl, Alexander Nabokoff, said that his fearlessness reminded him of another bright defenseman to come out of Yaroslavl – Vitali Vishnevsky. Denis plays well in the boards. He is not as successful in the open ice - making rookie positional mistakes that should go away as he gains more experience. To further develop his physical game, Denis needs to work on his size. He has bulked about eight pounds this past season, but he is still at only 178 pounds and needs to add some more muscle, especially in his upper body.

Denis absorbs knowledge like a sponge. He learns fast and always works hard on the ice. Offensively he has been developing well in the international competition at his age level, but has not been extensive used in an offensive role with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. Denis possesses a strong and well aimed shot. He is also a solid power play quarterback. His lack of experience is the main thing that is stopping him from taking a more prominent role on offense. Grebeshkov has the tools, but is prone to making mistakes and hence hesitates to take serious chances in the offensive zone. This is less evident if his play is assessed by only watching the International Tournaments, because he is light years ahead of many other players his own age. He possesses a great hockey sense. Dmitri Nabokoff put it very well when he said that Denis “knows where, when and how to act [on the ice], but is not always able to accomplish exactly what is needed”. Beyond the ice he is shy and timid. There were incidents when the security at the Lokomotiv arena did not allow him through, not believing that he is one of team’s leading defensemen.

2001 U20 WJC Review:
Denis Grebeshkov played on the second defensive pairing with the team’s captain, Anton Volchenkov. Denis was very mobile, displaying great puck handling and skating ability. Grebeshkov showed a lot of hockey sense and impressive vision of the ice. He however was not very physical and according to an observer from the tournament, he needs to bulk up and add some upper body strength. Denis also did not shoot the puck enough. According to an observer from the tournament, Denis was benched in the second period of the final game against Canada for unknown reasons. He did return in the third period, which leads to the possibility that he could have been injured.

Future

Grebeshkov has the potential of being a top four NHL defenseman. He is already mature beyond his age and has earned the trust of Vladimir Vujtek, the head coach of Super League’s gold winning team. Denis is NHL ready for this upcoming season and has been compared to Wade Redden.

Grebeshkov has signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings and is now playing in North America. He is playing with Manchester of the AHL as he goes thru the adaptation process to the smaller rinks and the North American style of game. Once Grebs gets acclimated, there should be no obstacle to his assent to a future NHL top 2 pairing a couple of years down the line.
