Course Description: This course examines the relationship between the person and message of Christ and the dominant attitudes of contemporary culture. Beginning with the Gospel narratives as a foundation, students acquire a deeper and more systematic knowledge of Christ, his message and his Church. Connections between the living Church and contemporary culture are explored in terms of what it means to be a responsible adolescent developing within a community of disciples in the context of a secular, pluralistic world. In the Family Life Education Strand, students explore a variety of topics related to the themes of personhood, interpersonal relationships and sexuality.

Unit #1: Using various sources, this chapter aims to name the characteristics that define what is means to be human and identifies the characteristics of the human person according to the Scriptures. The unit examines human as relational beings and the implications of our communal nature. It also explore the proclamation that creation, is good.

Unit #2: The unit explores our experiences of culture and its dynamic nature. This unit explores the proclamation that creation, particularily the human, is good. In addition, students are called to reflect upon the impact of the disorder of sin and evil on the good of creation. It also describes the nature of signs, symbols and rituals within culture. 

Unit #3: This unit calls students to recognize how the revelation of God to Moses led to the creation of the Chosen People. Students are also called to recognize how faith in God shaped the culture of the Chosen People. The unit explores the ways that Jesus speaks to us about God and how God has spoken to us.

Unit #4: This unit aims to explore the dominant vision of the self in our culture while exploring the implications of individualism on the self. The unit also attempts to understand that each individual becomes fully a person through relationships with God and others.

Unit #5: This unit explores, within the context of cultural influences , the meaning of friendships, the desire for intimacy in our lives and in our culture. This unit applies Catholic principles about sexuality within our culture.

Unit #6: This unit examines the influence of culture on our understanding and use of time as well as exploring a Catholic perspective on time and its implications for our lives. The unit also identifies the principles of justice in the social encyclicals and explores the call to live in just societies.

Unit #7: This unit explores the structures and meaning of the institutional Church. It also integrates this exploration with the students� experience of Church. Students explore the structures and meaning of the institutional Church.

Unit #8: This unit aims to explore the call to Christian witness and to celebrate the witness of the Church in our culture. The unit explores issues of social justice that relate to globalization and its ecological impact.

Unit #9:This unit aims to recognize the power of eucharistic people in our culture. It also brings together the students� experiences of Christ and culture. The unit calls the students to celebrate Christ�s promise in our lives.

Window of Opportunity: As partial fulfillment of the course requirements, students must submit assignments and projects as demonstration of the expected skills. Students will be provided with a date that an assignment must submitted by. The student reserves the opportunity to submit the assignment earlier than the last date. Any assignment will receive a failing mark as insufficient evidence of the skill has been presented.
