| Here are additional photos from my February-April 2004 trip to the city of Varanasi. | ||||||||||||
| Holi is the festival that marks the beginning of springtime in India. Children purchase small bags of colored powders and are allowed to throw the dry powder or powder dissolved in water at anyone in sight. The week before the festival, I came across a street where many storefronts were well stocked to supply the city with these playful powders. | One never knows who or what will be encoutered next. I met these two gentlemen during an afternoon walk. They invited me to share tea and to visit their temple the next day. The temple just happened to be devoted to Shiva and Kali, which may explain the countenance on the older gentleman's face. Om Nama Shiva-ya! |

| Springtime marks the appearance of brightly colored fresh produce in the street markets of Varanasi. | Friends and I were walking near Tulsi Ghat when we noticed movement in the middle of a pushcart. This small girl revealed herself, but was somewhat startled by the attention we were paying to her. | |||||||||||
