I first visited Varanasi in February 2003 with members of the San Francisco-based Friends of the Ganges to learn of the activities of a local NGO, the Sankat Mochan Foundation, which is dedicated to remedying the sewage pollution of the Ganges River, also known as Ganga-ma, in Varanasi. I returned to work in Varanasi during February-April 2004. With excellent assistance from a local scientist from Banaras Hindu Univeristy, a survey of waterborne disease was completed and 12 years worth of water quality data collected by the Foundation compiled for analysis. Here are some photos of daily life in the City of Shiva showing how local residents depend on their Mother Ganga. |
