I first visited Varanasi in February 2003 with members of the San Francisco-based Friends of the Ganges to learn of the activities of a local NGO, the Sankat Mochan Foundation, which is dedicated to remedying the sewage pollution of the Ganges River, also known as Ganga-ma, in Varanasi. I returned to work in Varanasi during February-April 2004. With excellent assistance from a local scientist from Banaras Hindu Univeristy, a survey of waterborne disease was completed and 12 years worth of water quality data collected by the Foundation compiled for analysis.
