It is a lab set up to study the effects of dominance relationships between fish, looking at specific interactions and behaviors. The goal was to examine the effects a given experience of dominant behavior would have on a fish, and how its subsequent behavior thereafter would be affected. This would eventually be extrapolated to the nature of human interactions, and to look for patterns seen in the research. 1/03-4/03-Obesity in the Community and Physician Training UConn School of Medicine Researcher: David J. Revere, M.D. I conducted a study to look at obesity and physician training. The study was designed to look at physician skill and attitudes in the treatment of obesity by assessing 5 areas: resident physician demographics, prior behavior modification training, %treatment plans developed, and perceived barriers and skills. The study utilzed a survey instrument to assess perceived skill and attitudes on treating obesity by primary care Internal Medicine residents in the UConn training program. The Connecticut Department of Public Health's Obesity Prevention and Control Program (OPCP), a government funded initiative, is working on multiple facets of health care delivery to improve treatment and assessment of obesity. They will do this via making changes in the infrastructure for health access in the Greater Hartford area, develop guidelines for pracitioners, and provide patient education. I wanted to look at how resident physicians view their role on the treatment of obesity. I believe that if results reveal that resident physicians feel they have no role in the treatment of obesity, that they cannot have an impact on their patients' weight, or if they do not have the skills to treat obesity, the Obesity Prevention and Control Program will need to tailor its efforts. The current literature supports that beliefs and attitudes are determinants of the effective delivery of counseling regarding diet modification. I plan to use the results to both shape the OPCP's development of treatment guidelines, and the residency program's resident education curriculum.
