Other: o.O Monkeys. Yes. II- Basics
Name: Kaimana Kekepania, the self-titled "Prince of Pirates"
Name meaning: Kaimana means "power of the ocean" and Kekepania means "crown"
Age: 28, or there about. He doesn't know his birthday and so his exact age is unknown.
Gender: Male, though some people would probably debate that.
Race: Human
Likes: Treasure, sailing, swimming, water in general, climbing and playing in the riggings (this was more a childhood joy, although he still does like it to some extentthought he probably wouldn't admit to it), fancy things (despite his choice in clothing and rather Spartan living quarters, he does like fancy things a quite a lothe simply doesn't see a use for them in his day-to-day life),
Dislikes: Women, Any mention of his effeminate features (or, hell, any mention of his body at allhe's very touchy about it), jokes aimed at him, not being taken seriously, storms, mountains (all nasty and jaggedand just not fun at all)
Hobbies: Swimming, particularly in the warm waters of the Great Arc.
Strengths: Few things make Kaimana particularly likeable. However, as a leader he is very strong, keeping his crew very well disciplined and carefully planning his plundering. He is also very determined and able to keep going despite anything that happens to him.
Weaknesses: A short temper and defective sense of humor. Also, he had a great deal of trouble trusting people and tends to drive them away with his constant suspicions and such.
Goals: To accumulate a huge amount of treasure and stolen goods, and eventually buy himself a mansion or something, and live the high life till the end of his days. III- A Deeper Look.
Appearance: Kaimana has a rather striking appearance and it's quite easy to pick him out in a crowd. For one thing, he is very tall, standing at six foot one, and thus is usually a good bit taller than anyone around him is. He is lithe and slender, with a toned, but not really muscular build. This is not to say that he is weak exactly, but compared to most other people, he isn't very strong at all.
The thing that people tend to notice very quickly about Kaimana is that he has rather effeminate features. Okay, very effeminate features. He is always clean-shaven, and in fact never has to shave he doesn't grow a beard at all. His face is oval-shaped, with delicate cheekbones and a rather pointed chin. His hazel colored eyes are long and narrow, titled up slightly and framed by thick black lashes. He would probably be considered beautiful, rather than handsome, where it not for the fact that his life at sea has taken its toll on his features to some extent. His naturally tan skin is darkened to a rather pleasant brown by his constant exposure to sun and weather. That same sun and weather have taken their toll on his skin though, and he usually has rather chapped lips and somewhat rough skin. His long, thin nose has been broken at least once and didn't heal quite right, leaving a bit of a kink in it. He also has a few scars on his face, the souvenirs of many bar fights and sea battles. One scar runs down the left side of his face, starting at just above the corner of his eye and going down to his chin. The second scar is a small, horizontal scar at the right corner of his mouth. It is roughly an inch long and tilts up slightly, giving him a rather unnerving, permanent lopsided grin. Still, all in all, he is not unattractive, provided you like them like that.
It is unclear exactly why Kaimana is so feminine in appearance. Biologically speaking, it is most likely because he has a very low level of testosterone for a man. That same lack would also accounts for his voice, which is quite high-pitched for a man. It is actually a very nice voice, and were he inclined to do so, Kaimana could probably sing very well. However, Kaimana is not inclined toward singing at all. Either way, it really doesn't matter what the cause is, since neither Kaimana nor anyone else in the world really has the skills to discover such things.
And then there's clothingKaimana actually has surprisingly simple taste in clothing, despite his claim that he is the Prince of Pirates. He prefers simple, functional clothing of the type worn by most sailors. This means mostly simple linen shirts, woolen pants, and cheap shoes. His thick, mid-back length black hair is usually pulled back in a loose ponytail with a ribbon of some sort. For the most part, Kaimana is simply uninterested in clothing and such, and thus just wears what he is used to from his days as a cabin boy and such. He does, however, have some nicer clothing. In particular, his pride and joy, a long wine-red jacket, with a stiff collar and large, turned back lapels and cuffs in off-white. The lapels and cuffs are covered with gold brocade, and the collar and hems are edged with gold as well. The jacket is very fancy and Kaimana only wears in on special occasions.
Personality: Those who expect Kaimana to have a flamboyant, girly personality to go along with his effeminate appearance are generally severely disappointed when they discover what Kaimana is really like. Though he may appear to be weak and effeminate, Kaimana is as much a man in personality as any other man. If anything, he acts more like what people consider being "masculine" than most men. Of course, this is largely because Kaimana is pretty damn insecure about his appearance and feels that he has to act the way he does, just to prove to people that he really is a man. And may the gods help whoever it is that says or makes comments that imply that he his less than manly. Kaimana's temper is short. Very, very short. He doesn't take well to teasing, insults, or anything of the sort and tends to lash out violently at whoever is teasing or insulting him. Not only that, he doesn't take jokes well either. He doesn't like being made to look a fool or anything like that, and thus jokes at his expense are simply out of the question. On the other hand, he has a rather high opinion of his own sense of humor. However, few people share this opinion, since his jokes tend to be rather cruel and spoken at the expense of others. Thus, it's rather difficult for people to find his jokes funny. He simply doesn't understand it.
With his short temper and slightly defective sense of humor, it is little wonder than he can be quite vindictive and cruel when angered. He teeters at the edge of being sadistic, but never quite crosses the line. However, punishments for misbehavior on his ship are quite harsh, though there is rarely any doubt that punishment is needed. At the very least, Kaimana is mostly just when meting out punishments and wont arbitrarily punish a person for no reason. Kaimana likes being in control, likes letting people know that he is in charge. More than that, he can't stand not being in charge, not having power and control over those around him. He comes off as a somewhat over-confidant and condescending sort of person, but in reality he is rather insecure and doesn't have very high self-esteem. He feels the need to demonstrate that he is the best and the one who should be in charge.
In some ways, Kaimana's personality is a bit of an oxymoron. He dislikes most people and trusts almost no one, yet at the same time he wants to be around people. His controlling nature comes into play here, and he will, one way or another, find a way for people to be around him if they refuse to be around him willingly. Despite his tendency to not allow people to become too close to him, he really is a very lonely person, though he isn't really aware of it as such. Or rather, he doesn't understand why he feels like he is missing something in his life, since he won't or can't admit to himself that he misses the company of people he can really call friends.
Over all, Kaimana is intelligent and has a very agile mind, but is not a person prone to introspection and really knows very little about his true self. His people skills are lacking on a personal level, but as a leader he excels. He is determined and driven, a self-reliant person by necessity, though perhaps not by choice. He definitely has a lot of issues and such that probably need to be worked out, but he tends to suppress those and pretend they aren't there. While not a particularly likeable person, or even one that seems to command respect at first glance, people tend to at least give a grudging sort of respect as they get to know him more, simply because of his remorseless and determined pursuit of his goals.
History: Kaimana was born in the slums of Yamas to a nondescript woman and an unknown father. Kaimana was never close to his mother, who was a distracted caregiver at best and outright neglectful most of the time. Kaimana left her care rather quickly, ending up living with a gang of various street-rats and homeless children. Life with them was not exactly much better than it had been with his mother, since he got picked on a teased a great deal because of his girly appearance, but it wasn't any worse either. He at least had the advantage of a quick mind and was good at coming up with plans, which at least made him valuable to the other kids.
As he grew older though, Kaimana began to tolerate the teasing less and less. He hated where he lived and wanted to see the outside world, which he heard a lot about from the sailors in Yamas. To this end, the now thirteen-year-old boy eventually stowed away on a ship that had docked in Yamas. He chose an unfamiliar ship, figuring that it wouldn't be in Yamas very long at all and would be uninclined to come back to Yamas once they discovered him on board. As it turned out, he was right in that respect. However, the ship also happened to be a pirate ship, which could have turned out quite badly for Kaimana. It was only by a great stroke of luck that the captain of the ship, having recently made a good deal of money gambling in Yamas, was in a very good mood and let Kaimana stay on the ship as a cabin boy.
Life as a cabin boy was, once again, not really a step up for Kaimana. He lacked the size or strength to be very useful and got picked on and teased by the sailors just as much as he had before. Despite this, he stayed on the ship for nearly a year, since he really had no other place to go. During this year he learned a lot about sailing, as well as the world around him, as the pirates traveled among the various port towns.
It was in one such port town, Mules, that Kaimana ended up leaving the ship, rather by accident. The ship was docked in Mules for supplies and Kaimana, not inclined toward helping with the heavy lifting, left the rest of the crew and went to explore the town. It was the first time he had ever been to Mules and thus he quickly got himself quite lost. While wandering around trying to find his way back to the docks, Kaimana was bumped into by another boy about his age. Having grown up on the streets himself, Kaimana knew that particular trick rather well, and immediately dashed off after the boy, who was running down the street with Kaimana's money in hand. Following the boy turned out to be a rather bad decision on Kaimana's part, because upon entering an alley, he quickly discovered that the boy was not alone. Though Kaimana was a fairly good fighter at this point, he was out numbered and it was really no contest as to who would win. As a result, the badly beaten Kaimana lay unconscious in the alley for quite some time. By the time he regained consciousness and returned to the docks, the pirate ship had already left.
This left Kaimana in a bit of a fix. He was now homeless and with out any sort of money at all. Thus he had no choice but to stay in Mules, working odd jobs and such, mostly for getting paid in the form of lodgings and food. He lived in Mules for several months like this, but quickly grew tired of living a life that was little above being a beggar. Thus, when he was offered a position on the Hanged Man, he accepted eagerly. The Hanged Man was a less than reputable merchant ship, well known for its harsh captain, and only semi-legitimate shipments. It wasn't really a step up from piracy, just piracy under the guise of being a legal business. This didn't really bother Kaimana much the pay for crewmembers on the Hanged Man was much better than it was for most other ships, simply because the ships bad reputation made it difficult to recruit new crew.
Kaimana spent the next eight years working on the Hanged Man. It wasn't easy work, but there were certainly enough rewards to keep Kaimana satisfied. He was intelligent and skilled enough to get around the fact that he was physically weaker than most of the rest of the crew, and he eventually worked his way up to the position of second mate.
Roughly around Kaimana's twenty-second year, the captain of the Hanged Man fell suddenly sick and died. There were rumors on the ship that the first mate had killed the captain and the rest of the crew quickly grew to dislike the first mate, who had developed quite an ego and attitude upon becoming captain. Kaimana, no more thrilled with this turn of events than any of the rest of the crew, organized a small mutiny of sorts and killed the first mate/captain. As the organizer and leader of the little coup, this landed Kaimana squarely in the position of captain, at least for the time being. Kaimana, being no idiot, was well aware that a crew willing to mutiny once would probably do so again, if given a reason to. Thus he worked hard to make sure that this didn't happen, both through placating the crew and paying very close attention to the crew member's conversations and such.
And thus Kaimana and the crew of the Hanged Man set about plundering the high seas. Kaimana was entirely uninterested in maintaining the thin cover of being a legitimate ship. He considered such a ruse to be a hindrance more than anything else, and found that out and out piracy was much more to his liking. The crew found this to be much to their liking as well, and the Hanged Man quickly became one of the most successful and feared pirate ships. Kaimana and his crew have spent the past seven years plundering ships and building up a rather respectable fortune, as well as a substantial reputation.
IV- Battle Style
Weaponry: Kaimana's weapon of choice is a falchion, a huge scimitar-like weapon with a wide, curved blade. Usually he wears it strapped to his back. Despite his size and general build, he is actually quite proficient in the weapon's use. It does have some disadvantages for a person of his size though and thus he has a second weapon in the form of a long stiletto dagger concealed in the handle of the falchion.
Magic and Affinity: Kaimana has an affinity for water magic. However, he has no skills as a magician and never uses magic.
Skills:
- Acrobatics. Years of living on a ship have made Kaimana an adept climber and he's learned a great deal of tricks for getting around in the riggings. In fact, it's become so natural for him that he rather resembles a monkey climbing around in the riggingdon't tell him that though.
- Fighting at Sea. MUCH easier said that done, especially in rough seas. However, living on a ship all his life, Kaimana has grown very good at fighting in less than ideal conditions on a boat. This carries over somewhat to fights elsewhere, but in some cases can be a hindrance too, simply because he is so used to fighting at sea.
- Pick Pocketing and Lock Picking. Neither is really a battle skill, but they are skills that Kaimana knows, thanks to his early years in Yamas. With his long, dexterous fingers, Kaimana makes a good pickpocket, though he doesn't use that skill much anymore and is thus a bit out of practice. Locking picking on the other hand is something that Kaimana knows how to do, but was never really inclined to do. He doesn't have the patience for such work and is really not good at it at all, since he has had little practice.
Battle Style: While not inclined to jump right into the thick of battle (that's what crewmembers are for, after all) Kaimana can at least hold his own in battle. He fights with a loose, flowing style that is almost like dancing. It is a very adaptable style, and especially suited to his weapon of choice, simply because the momentum of his moves allows him to wield the heavy falchion with ease. The chief problem with his style of fighting is that his normal weapon limits the types of attacks he can make. Because of the falchion's weight, he can't make stabbing attacks, only wide swings. This is a rather large disadvantage at times, because his attacks can leave him open and his recovery time is slow, thanks to the weight of the weapon. However, on the up side, the falchion's weight also means that his attacks do a lot of damage. Its not uncommon for him to sever arms or legs with it or shatter the weapon of his opponent, bringing the battle to a swift close. The falchion's large blade also makes it easier for him to block attacks, provided he can move his weapon in time. Another problem that tends to arise, both because of the weight of the weapon and the size of the blade, is that it can sometimes get stuck if it cuts too deeply. Thus the reason for the stiletto hidden in the handle of the falchion, so that he is not left weaponless if this happens.
