The capuchin monkey is one of the more easily recognized members of the new world monkey ground. They are the monkey associated with Italian organ grinders, and are often used in films due to their easy trainability. These monkeys are extremely intelligent, and possess good hand-eye coordination. The capuchin is active mostly during the day, and like most new world monkeys, it�s arboreal. It lives in groups of about 10 to 20, and these groups contain more females than males. These monkeys eat a variety of things, from leave, berries and shoots, to insects, baby squirrels and small birds. They can manage to live up to 46 years of age. When threatened these monkeys jump up and down, shaking branches, hoping to scare off the threat. These monkeys also seem to associate with spider monkeys, cooperating with the other species. They have around 14 different vocalizations, and they use them for a wide array of purposes, from mating to showing contentment. These monkeys also work to improve the over all heath of the forest, by pollinating some plants, and spreading the seeds of others. As proof to these monkeys intelligence, they are often featured in movies including, Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. |
