The Meaning of Mazoku

Many people translate the word "mazoku"  as "demon" or "monster", and 
as a collective, "evil race." "zoku"  does indeed mean "race" but from 
my knowledge of Japanese (which I will admit, isn't much) "ma"  does 
not mean evil. Rather it means something more like "magic" or "spirit" 
or at least that's how it seems to me used. So the "mazoku"  would mean 
"magical race" or "spirit race" which makes more sense since they exist 
on the astral plane.
