Remote Control
Home
RM-15 and RM-20 are the only two remote control units made by Nakamichi that has the Reverse/Both Direction Play buttons where RM-15 was designed for RX-505, RX-303 and RX-202 tape decks. "The RM-15 remote control substitutes for the RM-5 with the reverse button on the RM-15 having no effect on a single direction deck."

(Even though all the RX-202's made from 1982 to either 1991 or 1992 didn't have the remote control input jack at the back of the Deck, the later ones do)

RM-20 on the other hand was specially designed for use with the legendary Dragon tape deck. Both the RM-15 and RM-20 are compatible with Dragon and other Bi-Directional tape decks (RX-505, RX-303 and RX-202). Moreover, RM-15 and RM-20 can not only be used with Bi-Directional tape decks, but can also be used with Uni-Directional tape decks where the reverse button won't be of any use.

See the rare picture below of RM-15 and RM-20 side by side.
RM-580 is the only Wireless remote control other than the RM-7C (RM-7C can only be used with CR-7A - see picture above) made by Nakamichi. No wonder, both the RM-580 and RM-20 are rare.

RM-5 and RM-200 remote controls on the other hand can not ony be used with Uni-Direction tape decks, but are also compatible with Dragon, RX-505, RX-303 and RX-202. The only drawback ofcourse is you won't be able to play in reverse direction.
RM-5, RM-15, RM-20 and RM-200 are compatible with following tape decks that has the 8 din Female Plug for Remote:

-580, 580M, 581, 581Z, 582, 582Z
-660ZX, 670ZX, 680, 680ZX, 681ZX, 682ZX
-700ZXE, 700ZXL (Mechanism)
-1000ZXL & 1000ZXL Limited (Mechanism)
-Dragon (Auto Reverse)
-BX-300
-RX-202, RX-303, RX-505 (Auto Reverse)
-LX-3, LX-5
-ZX-7, ZX-9
-CR-2, CR-3, CR-4, CR-5
*All the Cassette Deck and DR series models with RC-3 converter.
RC-4 converter should work too, but I'm not sure.
As seen in this picture, each pin has a function to it. Pin #1 - Stop. Pin #2 - Pause. Pin #3 - Play. Pin #4 - F.Fwd. Pin #5 - Rew. Pin #6 - Rec. Pin #7 - Ground. Pin #8 - Reverse (RX-202/303/505, & Dragon only).
Now the million dollar question. RM-580 remote control has 8 din Male Jack that fits with all Tape decks (mentioned above) that has 8 din Female Jack. Then why doesn't the remote work?
The RM-580R (receptor) has 8 din Male Jack but it requires 12 volts to work. The Pin #8 (center pin) is used to supply it with 12V from Nakamichi Tape Deck. Since RX-202/303/505, & Dragon uses Pin #8 for Reverse function, they can't supply power to RM-580 and so it won't work. Following Tape decks uses #8 pin to supply 12V required by RM-580:
-1000ZXL & 1000ZXL Limited
-580, 580M, 581, 581Z, 582, 582Z
-680, 680ZX, 681ZX, 682ZX
-700ZXE, 700ZXL
-BX-300
-LX-3, LX-5
-ZX-7, ZX-9
However, if you want to use wireless RM-580 for your Nak Tape Deck that has 8 din jack, YES it can be done. You can use it just as RM-20 (without Auto Reverse function for RX-202/303/505, & Dragon). You will have make an adapter to supply 12 volts where '+' will connect to the center pin (pin #8) and ground will connect to pin #7.
