Types of Ships

The RoSoG aknowledges several different types of ships, but currently only has guidelines for the three most commonly used, two of which are built in three classes. The types are as follows:

Ramships or Tarnships
Roundships or Merchant Ships
Serpent Raiders or Longships

Of those, Ramships and Roundships come in three classes:

Light
Medium
Heavy

Other types of ships that the RoSoG aknowledges and registers, though currently has no guidelines for are as follows:

Skiffs
Barges
Galleys
Dhows

In the future, other types of ships that are listed in the books may be added and the guidelines that exist may be modified to handle these other types of ships. Currently, there are no plans in this direction.

This page is under works to provide you with quotes from the books to give you more accurate descriptions of the ships listed as written in the books of Gor. If you would like to provide quotes to add in here, please include book title and page number and send them to Keria Saber. Quotes used will contain contributor's name. It is hoped that this will eventually provide enough information that those who have not been able to attain the books will be able to at least gain basic knowledge of how the ships were written to be, though it is to be said that no amount of quotes can take the place of actually learning from the books themselves.

The merchant ship, or round ship, is the backbone of the trading system on Gor. Most cities are located on or near a navigable water way specifically to allow the merchant vessels to reach them. Even Ar, a landlocked city, had a trading station, Ar Station, located on the mighty Vosk river. The warship, or ram ship, is the reason for the glimmer in every Captain's eye. Pirates and raids are an integral part of Gorean society and the Gorean way of life. City ports are well guarded to discourage raids and pirates constantly lurk and ply the shipping lanes.

Purpose of the Registry

The Registry of Ships on Gor (RoSoG) was started with two goals in mind. One, to allow players to register the ships they RP with and to keep track of how many kills, escapes, etc., each ship is credited with so that players can brag about their sailing prowess. Two, to provide a SIMPLE, uniform, and yet realistic dice format for naval warfare that requires players to use luck and a bit of strategy to sink, capture, or escape from their opponent. By meeting these goals the Registry of Ships aims to encourage more interaction between the Captains, the Pirates, the Merchant Caste, and the Builders Caste.

Now, though the tracking of kills, escapes, etc. has not been done in some time, we still do maintain current, up-to-date records of those ships which are eligible for RoSoG style combat between ships. Along with this, rosters will be maintained for proctors and shipwrights who are eligible to submit ships for registration to the RoSoG.

Should you have further questions, please see the Frequently Asked Questions page. If you can't find the answer there, then feel free to contact the RoSoG Administration. Though things questioning guidelines and regulations need to be directed to Keria Saber and the council. We do not handle your OOC situations that are not directly related to the events occurring during a ship battle, or otherwise directly involve the RoSoG. If you have a problem with a builder or a proctor, then you will need to address it to that person. We, the staff of the RoSoG, do not endorse, validate or invalidate anything else. It's your RP, you deal with it as you see fit.

Our duty is simple: to maintain records of ships and persons which follow this forum and to maintain as current and accurate information as possible to make your RP experience regarding ships, pirating and battles more enjoyable and easy to follow. We will offer you places to attain more information, some of which are done by our own members, some of which done by others. Credits to work by others will be listed with the information they have provided. Thank you and good luck out there! The Thassa and the rivers can be dangerous places.

Harassment and OOC Insults

Though we are aware that there will be conflicts and misunderstandings, the RoSoG reserves the right to ignore any player who repeatedly harasses or insults the RoSoG Management and its Scribes. Don't be afraid to speak your mind, we have rather thick skin and are used to handling conflicts. This guideline is set up for those who simply have an axe to grind and choose to sharpen it on us, for whatever reason. We will tolerate only so much, then you will be placed on ignore with all listings and ships to that screen name being removed from existence on the registries. We are here volunteering our time and our efforts to maintain a structure to this game so we can all enjoy it, and are not here to be whipping posts. It is our philosophy that ignoring people will only be used in extreme circumstances.

Further guidelines in this area will be added as need arises.
