Chapter 9

"Honestly Nick, I'm scared.  I have the feeling that this could be amazing, but I don't know if right now is the time for it.  I'm scared that we could be perfect together and then in three months I have to pack up and leave you.  I'm scared that three months is not long enough to want to have a long distance relationship with someone and I'll lose you without ever knowing if we could be forever.  I'm scared that Mandy has made you not want to trust any girl.  And my biggest fear is that I might hurt you like she did.  That I'll leave you so hurt that you can't even talk about me."  Lexa felt a tear on her cheek, which she quickly wiped away.  She normally didn't cry in front of people.  She could count on her hands the number of times anyone had seen her cry.  Now Nick had witnessed the phenomenon twice in one day.
Nick didn't know what to say.  She had just confessed all her fears to him, and they were suprisingly similar to his own.  He just wanted to kiss her and make all of them go away.  He placed a hand on her face and slowly stroked her face.  She let her head rest lightly on his hand.  "I can't promise you that all of that won't happen, so I'm not gonna even try.  I can't say that after three months we'll still be together or that Mandy hasn't left some lasting impact on how I deal with relationships.  I can promise you, though, that I would give this relationship all of me, and I would only hope you would do the same.  So what do you say?  Do we give this a try, and just live in the moment instead of worrying about the past or the future, things we can't change?  So maybe we'll get burned, or maybe it will be magic.  How else are we ever gonna know?"
Lexa thought for a moment before pressing her lips to Nick's, a sign of her affirmation.  Nick responded, gently pushing Lexa back on the couch.  Nick used his tongue to open her mouth slightly and was met by hers.  Using all her strength, Lexa managed to push Nick off of her and end the kiss.
"What's the matter?"  Nick asked, still on top of her, their faces only inches apart.
"I thought we came here to talk."  Lexa said, a wicked smile on her face.
"We can do that anytime," Nick said, leaning in for another kiss, which she allowed, but only a small one.
"Nope, now," Lexa said, sitting up straight.
"Okay," Nick said reluctantly, sitting up on the opposite end of the couch.  "What do you wish to discuss Miss Lexa?"
"I want you to tell me about Mandy," Lexa said frankly.
"Huh?  I don't think now is the time for it.  Besides, why do you care?"
"Because I think she was a big part of your life for a relatively long time and you've never really told me about her.  I mean you told me it was three years together, she could get jealous at times, and that she moved her stuff out.  That couldn't have been the whole relationship, so spill it."
"Alright, fine.  But just remember you are the one who wanted me to talk about my ex.  You are the only girl I've ever met who wanted me to talk about my ex.  I met her at the doctor's office.  She was a year younger than I was, but she was cute, and the doctor said she was a nice girl, so I asked her out.  It was great for the first year and a half, before we made it really big here in the states.  Other than a few silly fights over god knows what, we had the perfect relationship.  After the "Millennium" album came out, things changed.  I was having problems with my mom, over my career and such, so I decided to move into my own place, with Mandy.  I don't think we were ready to move in together, too young now that I look back on it.  Anyway, a little while later, our relationship became public knowledge and Mandy really had to interact with the fans.  She hated the ones who were pretty or wanted hugs.  She would stare them down, or just be plain rude to them.  While we were on tour, she moved out twice.  Both times because she thought I got a little too friendly with a fan.  The second time was for good, gone before I even got home.  So there you go the condensed version of Mandy Willaford and Nickolas Carter."
Lexa took one of Nick's hands in her own, and touched the side of his face with the other.  Talking about Mandy drained him, she could see it in his eyes.  "Thank you.  It means a lot to me that you can talk to me about that."  She kissed his forehead before laying her head in his lap.  Nick ran his fingers through her hair.  "So anything you want to know about me, you can ask."
"Are you a virgin?"
"What?  Isn't it a little soon for the sex discussion?"
"You said anything."  Nick wasn't really concerned with the topic quite yet, but he wanted to see if she was telling the truth.
"Yes, I am."
"Waiting for marriage?"
"No, just the right guy.  He hasn't exactly waltzed into my life quite yet, but I'm sure he will.  Any other questions?"
"Not right now, but can I take a rain check?"
"Definitely."  Lexa looked at the clock, 1:30am.  "I need to be getting home, mom will be worried."
"Well, you could always stay here tonight."
"Um, I don't know Nick, that might not go over so well."  Lexa was a little uneasy spending the night with Nick so soon, even though she knew nothing would happen.
"C'mon, you could sleep in the guest room.  Call your mom."  Nick handed her the phone.
"Hey mom?I know its late?I'm spending the night at Nick's cause home is a little out of the way so I thought I'd make it easy on him?Okay, I'll see you in the morning."  Lexa handed the phone back to Nick.  "Okay, all set.  Now where do I sleep."
