"Lexa, time to get up," her mom shouted even though she was not even two feet away from the bed. Lexa rolled over onto her back and the sunlight hit her eyes. 'Those blinds have got to go up today,' she thought. "Go away," she said sleepily, while shielding her eyes. "No. Get up. Its already noon and the barbecue starts at one, so do me a favor and get your lazy ass out of bed." "Fine, fine. No need to get all grumpy with me this early in the day," Lexa replied, tossing the covers off with her legs and swinging her feet to the floor. Her bed here was slightly lower than the one at school, and her feet hit the floor with a thud instead of brushing the ground. "You might to get in the shower, cause we are leaving at one, whether or not you are ready." "Already, I'm going already," she said, while taking a pair of shorts and a tank top out of her dresser. She stomped across her room and slammed the door shut to the bathroom. By the time she got out of the shower and got dressed, her clock read half past noon. "Great, now I have a half hour to get ready," Lexa said to herself as she looked in the mirror. She had on khaki cargo shorts and a black spaghetti tank top. She was braiding her pigtails when the phone rang. "What the eff?"(*author's note-eff or effing is an expression I use alot so that I don't get into the habit of swearing, so I'm sure you can tell what it means.) Lexa said before picking up the phone. "Hello" "Lexa?" the voice on the other end asked, unsure of who she was talking to. "Yeah, who's this?" "Its Ang." "Ang, omigod. So sorry. I didn't even recognize your voice." Ang was Lexa's cousin and also one of her best friends. They had practically grown up together and were as tight as two people could get. People often wondered why they were friends, though, because they had completely different personalities. "No problem, its already forgotten. So what's up?" "Well, actually I'm in the middle of getting ready for a barbecue. Mom and Dad got invited to one, and now since I'm home I get to go," Lexa said sarcastically. "Maybe it won't be so bad. Maybe some cute guys will be there." "Yeah right. They are probably all younger than I am and I don't know if I want to get with a guy who is still living with his parents at this age." "Well, some could be home from college for the summer, and their parents are dragging them along too." "Huh, I never thought about that. And you know what they say, 'Misery loves company'." "There you go, thinking like me finally." "Oh god help me," Lexa said and they both laughed. She was interrupted by her mom hollering to her. "Lexa are you almost ready?" "Yeah mom, I'll be down in a few," she hollered back, covering the mouthpiece. "Hey Ang, I'll call you back. I have to finish getting ready." "Sure. Let me know how the BBQ goes. If there are any really cute ones, save them for me." "Ang, you already have one too many boyfriends, you don't need another." "That reminds me, I have to tell you about that problem." "Alright, I'll try to call you later tonight." "Talk to you then. Bye." "Bye," Lexa said and then hung up the phone. She finished braiding her hair and put on her red kercheif to protect her hair from the sun. She slipped into her black Old Navy flip flops and took one last look in the mirror. She hadn't had time for makeup, but even if she did have time theres no guarentee that she would wear any. She shut her door behind her and met her parents at the bottom of the stairs.
