TO THE MAN FROM MONTREAL

Normally this would be good news, but unfortunately his girlfriend is incredibly kind hearted and equally gullible. I'd already talked her out of trying to claim her fortune from overseas royalty in the past.
A second later she got on the phone to tell me she planned to help people with the money.
I told her it sounded nice, but had she ever played the sweepstakes? She said she plays lots of different sweepstakes. I asked her to be sure it wasn't a scam since it sounded a little fishy.
The $500,000 check was to arrive the next day.
I told her I would be shocked if such a check arrived. In previous conversations myself and others had warned her repeatedly about people who make their living by taking advantage of others.
Los Angeles City is brimming with them.
The check didn't arrive, but a phone call from "a man in Montreal" advised her that in order to receive her winnings she needed to wire them via Western Union $12,000 to pay the taxes.
Sadly, by the time we'd had our second conversation this "man in Montreal" had absconded with her money. It was already too late.
A quick internet search revealed that the fraud occurring from Canada on U.S. citizens was so prevalent that the LA office of the FBI had set up a web page dedicated to it. Obviously, this "man in Montreal" wasn't acting alone and he was working with several accomplices.
The web paged detailed victim after victim. 43 indictments have already been handed out, but the Montreal boiler rooms are still churning up new victims every day.
It's easy pickings.
There is no shortage of people to defraud in this world. And it's usually the people who can least afford it.
But we reap what we sow. Whether a bountiful harvest or the whirlwind. And in stealing from others we devalue a priceless possession.
What's the price of a man's soul? In Montreal it is $12,000.
