Good Night, Heero by Hisui
A soft knocking on his door brought Heero to full wakefulness. With bleary eyes, he looked upon his laptop that was on top of the desk across the room... no, no new mission quite yet, so why was someone waking him?
“Nani?” His voice was hoarse from sleep. Reaching underneath his pillow, he fingered the outline of the gun he kept underneath him at night. A sliver of light from the hall made him blink away the rest of his sleep. Duo, wearing a pair of tattered boxer shorts and a t-shirt that had obviously seen better days, quietly walked into the room. He was carrying a pillow under one arm. Duo’s shiny chestnut hair was loose from its braid, showering past the boy’s buttocks in unruly tangles.
“I’m sorry, Heero...I know it’s late and all, but, I can’t sleep” the young boy was very subdued, and this concerned Heero greatly. An unhappy, quiet Duo could not be a good thing. Heero sighed.
“Hn. Baka, you woke me” he snorted derisively, but Duo didn’t even smile or flinch at his rudeness. Definite trouble. “What is it?” The other boy just diverted his eyes, suddenly finding his toes more interesting than the concerned look on Heero’s face.
“It’s just that...well, you and I have been roommates before, right?” He asked tentatively, stubbing his toe against the wood, still not looking at Heero. Wait, was Duo actually blushing a little? Heero found himself unable to take his eyes off of Duo. With the light behind him making his hair and bare skin shine softly, Duo was an irresistible sight. Momentarily stunned by the strange emotions that Duo always caused when he was around, Heero found himself transfixed.
“Hn.”
“And while I like the privacy we have with the school providing single rooms and all, I’m kinda lonely there.” Duo finally looked up and gazed into Heero’s eyes. The violet eyes of his fellow pilot were anxious, and Heero might have been wrong, but he thought he saw a little fear there as well. ‘Does Duo fear me, or is it something else?’ Then Heero realized that the boy had left the door open.
“Close the door, Baka” he said roughly, not wanting to attract any attention from their dorm mates. Quickly, the other boy turned and closed the door obediently. Then he walked over to the side of Heero’s bed, his eyes hopeful. Heero leaned up on one elbow and looked at Duo carefully. Duo waited, still quiet. “You’re having nightmares again, aren’t you?” Heero asked, his voice surprisingly soft in the moonlit room. Duo twitched nervously, crossing his thin arms against his chest as if he felt a chill. His pillow dropped to the floor with a soft thud.
“Uh...yeah.” Duo looked so young, so unnervingly innocent at his admission. Such a strong warrior, so passionate, and he trusted Heero with this secret. This must have been humiliating for the boy to walk to Heero’s room and make such an admission. Heero decided to honor the boy’s trust in him. Despite Duo’s more annoying attributes, such as the loud voice, the brash mannerisms, the persistence he showed in garnering Heero’s friendship, Heero really did care for him.
“What do you want from me, Baka?” Heero asked. Duo came to a sudden realization... perhaps Baka wasn’t the usual insult between the two of them anymore. A small smile erupted on his lips before he answered. So, if it didn’t mean idiot anymore, what was the new translation?
“I...I was kind of hoping I could sleep in your room tonight? Just for the night, of course” he blurted out, becoming bold. Duo realized that his heart was beginning to beat just a little faster. Heero’s eyes closed for a moment as he considered the request, and Duo found himself getting nervous all over again. As much as he enjoyed making Duo squirm sometimes, now wasn’t the time for toying with him.
“Hn, come here.” He said as he raised the bedding to allow Duo room. The other boy gasped in happiness, and Heero was treated to a very bright, happy smile from Duo as the boy crawled into the bed and under the covers.
“Oh, thanks, Heero! I promise not to hog the blankets, man!” He looked up at Heero as the boy covered him in the soft warmth of his bed. When Heero wrapped a muscular arm around Duo, Duo looked up at him in confusion. Instead of Heero’s normally passive face, his expression was soft, almost loving.
“Go to sleep, Baka” Heero murmured into his hair, and suddenly Duo started to figure out what Baka meant. Confused, but not willing to turn away this sudden turn of events, Duo curled up against the other boy’s muscular frame. Just as he drifted asleep, Duo felt Heero’s lips ever so gently kiss the top of his head.
Heero stayed awake for a few minutes longer than his exhausted comrade-in-arms. He wasn’t very certain of his feelings for Duo, or why he had allowed the annoying boy to touch his heart. He had always considered himself void of emotion, at least he had until Duo actually befriended him. Still, during this time where lives end so quickly, chances are few, and friendships even more rare, he decided to take his chances with Duo. His decision made, the boy nestled against Duo and quickly went to sleep.
end....
