SATURDAY, APRIL 21ST - book
discussion, "DHARMA BREEZE" (from 3-5 pm)
by Rev. Dr. Nobuo Haneda, (Director
of the Maida Institute of Buddhism in Berkeley, Ca.)
Shin Buddhism and Zen Buddhism
are the two major Buddhist traditions in Japan. Although many people in the
U.S. know about Zen, not many know about Shin Buddhism. Even many of those who
call themselves Shin Buddhists are uncertain as to what their religion is all
about. Ever since I came to this country from Japan, I have been surprised by
Shin Buddhists different understandings of their religion. Some understand it
as an ethno-cultural teaching or an ethical teaching. Some regard it as a
mythical teaching. Others interpret it as a religion similar to Christianity
that talks about the salvation of the wicked by a loving savior.
(from the Preface by the author)
Shin Buddhism (or the teachings
of Shinran) teaches us the importance of humility, the most important universal
virtue. Many people think the ultimate goal in Buddhism as well as human life
is the become good, but according to Shinran it is to become humble
Most people think the ultimate
goal in Buddhism is to become enlightened, but in reading this book
we gain another perspective through Dr. Haneda's insights into the
teachings of Shinran, which show us the importance of humility as a
key aspect in Shin Buddhist spiritual growth.
