Yakyuu (yah-kyoo-oo)
野球
やきゅう
N.
Yakyuu is field ball literally or what's more commonly said, baseball. After sumou, baseball gets the most attention of all the western sports. You see Japanese players going into the major leagues in America and vice versa. You also see people in places like San Francisco with Japanese baseball caps and you see Japanese people wear equipment of American baseball teams. Not only that, high school baseball games get lots of attention, as the teams aim for Koushien Stadium, the place of the championship game, in Osaka.
The Yomiuri Giants, located in Tokyo and the team you'll most likely see people wearing equipment of in San Francisco, has won the most amount of championships. The person who holds the record for most homeruns ever is Japanese (well, half-Japanese and half-Chinese actually) in Oh Sadaharu-san, not Hank Aaron. Japanese players are generally known for taking their fundamentals seriously and if you don't believe me, they won the first World Baseball Classic tournament which was held in places like Tokyo and San Diego because of their pitching, defense and keen hitting.
Besides Oh-san, some important Japanese players to take note of include Suzuki Ichirou-san, Ootsuka Akinori-san, Matsui Hideki-san, Nomo Hideo-san, Shinjou Tsuyoshi-san, Iguchi Tadahito-san and Matsuzuka Daisuke-san. "Touch" is a popular series that is about baseball and so is "Princess Nine". Baseball's an important element in "Swing Girls".
