Smile For Me ~By Shimegami-chan

*It should be noted that I wrote this during a blizzard. Seriously. Your typical blanket fic. o.O*
Duo stumbled out of Deathscythe, legs shaking, matted braid flying in the wind.
"Heero!" he screamed at the relentless darkness. "Heero, where are you?!?"
Kuso. The black-clad pilot touched a finger to the side of his face and felt hot blood pouring from his ears. Must have gotten damaged in the explosion. All he could hear was a faint ringing like a telephone nobody would pick up, and he feverently hoped it wasn't permanent. He'd be heading straight to the hospital as soon as they got out of there.
If we get out of here... he thought silently. Better look for Heero, since I can't hear him calling...
Duo tried to pinpoint exactly where Zero had gone down, but his sense of direction was way off. The raging snow around him wasn't helping at all...Duo gathered his wits and began trudging forward, red blood still dripping onto the white ground.
A little ways out he spotted a plume of smoke rising out of the trees and ran to it. It was the twisted wreckage of Wing Zero, still smouldering from its trip down to the ground.
Duo was only half-reassured by this. Since Heero hadn't destroyed the Gundam, he was probably still inside it. But was he even still alive?
The American boy cleared the thoughts from him head and ran toward Zero. Luckily Heero was still breathing inside the cockpit--albeit he was unconscious--and Duo undid his friend's restraints.
The Japanese boy was in no condition to be going out into a snowstorm, but Duo knew the enemy would be coming over to check out the mangled Gundam soon. He stripped off his outer shirt and put it on Heero's shivering body, then hoisted him over his shoulder, despite the pain he himself was feeling.
The two of them set off into the stormy night.
-----------------------------------
Duo didn't think he could take one more step. Blood was pouring from his ears and a gash on his leg, and Heero; who still hadn't woken up, was turning an unhealthy shade of blue. Duo wondered if there was any point in going on, but he had to try. After all we've been through, I'm not gonna let either of us lose our lives unnecessarily.
Deathscythe's map had told him that they were fairly close to an abandoned Alliance base, it was just a matter of making it that far. Duo wanted to badly just to lie down in the snow and go to sleep. Actually, he wasn't so cold anymore, he really couldn't feel his legs and it seemed that his torso was about to follow. Most of the pain in his ears had subsided as well, all there was now was silence. Silence and the pure white walls and floor and ceiling of the freezing little world he was confined to.
"You can't...kill...Death..." he muttered as him struggled on. "It's just not that easy."
But it seemed as though his body was having different thoughts altogether.
-----------------------
Heero awoke to feel the screaming wind buffeting him and chilling him to the bone. He quickly realized that Duo was carrying him through the blizzard. "Duo, daijobu ka?"
The American boy didn't respond, just kept walking stoically.
"Duo..." Heero put a pain-wracked hand on Duo's shoulder and Duo jumped and stopped suddenly.
"Let me try to walk." Heero lowered himself to the ground. Duo looked slightly confused. Heero's left leg wasn't taking his weight very well, even though he couldn't feel it he knew it was broken. Not good.
Duo said something a little too quietly and offered Heero a piggyback by stooping down, wincing in pain as he did so.
Heero debated whether doing so would be an asset to their survival or not. Duo himself was injured and weakened, but could probably move considerably faster than Heero could until he was able to get a good look at his leg. Heero nodded assent and carefully climbed onto Duo's back. "Hiyaku, let's go."
The American stood up and continued to struggle forward.
-----------------------
Duo was glad that Heero was distributing his weight so well, walking was a lot easier than it had been before. He could see a dark shape on the horizon, that could be the base or could be a hallucination. He wasn't too sure.
His spirits had lifted considerably now that he knew Heero was all right--for the moment, at least--and he almost forgot about the cold and the pain thinking about him. He had felt something special for the Japanese boy for a long time, much more than friendship, but he had never acted on it. Now the one he admired was so close to him that Duo could touch him, feel Heero's warm breath on the back of his neck.
Heero's shaking fingers touched the blood on the side of Duo's face and he imagined the other pilot looking at him inquisitively. "I can't hear anything, Heero. I think when Deathscythe blew up they bombed out on me."
Heero shifted his weight and pointed at the thing looming in front of them. "I think it's an Alliance base that was on Deathscythe's map." yelled Duo. "Let's head for it."
Even though he had been walking for what seemed like forever since he had first seen the building looming ahead, they didn't seem to have gotten any closer. Duo forced his legs to move faster. I'm not gonna make it.
An eternity passed and Duo was so close that he could reach out and touch the door. It opened fairly easily and Heero dismounted and limped inside, Duo following. They shut the large door and Heero offered him a ghost of a smile and said something.
Duo tried to grin back, but every inch of his body felt like it was frozen. "Made it..."
Heero looked concerned--since when does Heero ever look like that?--and he came over to Duo and said something else. Duo belatedly noticed that his eyes had somehow slipped half-closed. "Oi, Heero-man, aren't there any lights in here? I'm getting...so sleepy..."
His disobediant body began to tremble even more and Duo's world went from pure white to black.
Heero barely caught Duo as he pitched forward. "Duo? Daijobu deska?"
The American didn't respond, so Heero half-carried and half-dragged him into the closest room and sat him against the wall. "Duo? Duo?"
Duo's porcelain face was streaked with blood; fresh, frozen, and caked all over. After just a few second of sitting down more blood began to pool around him, coming from somewhere else. Heero inspected Duo's leg to find a large, nasty-looking gash there. He shouldn't have carried me all that way...he's lost so much blood...
Heero ran out of the room and into some of the base barracks, grabbing some blankets from the storage closets. Hang on, Duo.
First-aid kit in hand, he stripped off Duo's clothing and bandanged the injured leg, then turned his attention to his own broken limb. It wasn't too bad, he decided, and happy that Duo couldn't hear he set it back in place and put a bandage around it.
He gave me his own clothes.
Grim as the situation was, Heero smiled at the chestnut-haired boy buried under the blankets. "Thanks."
Get a hold of yourself, Yuy. He laid his and Duo's clothes flat on the floor to dry and hoped Duo wasn't going to be objectional about what he was about to do. He slipped under the pile of blankets beside his friend and huddled as close to Duo as he could. "Let's get you warmed up."
Heero checked Duo's pulse--steady--and began to clean some of the blood from his face with warm water and cloths he had found.
Duo suddenly started making odd noises with his throat and the concerned Heero checked his breathing, but found nothing amiss--Duo had fallen asleep. Heero shook his head and sat back against the wall to wait for him to wake up. As soon as he moved, though, Duo threw his right arm possessively around Heero and snuggled under the wool blankets in an odd-looking bear hug. The surprised Japanese boy didn't know what to do, so he didn't move. Duo shifted a little and mumbled, "Oi, Heero-man, did you know how cute you are when you smile?"
Heero choked on the breath he was intaking and looked down at Duo, but the American boy was still softly snoring. Was he...
Heero tried out another smile, even though neither he nor Duo was able to see it. "It feels good, Duo." He put his right hand on Duo's shoulder and rubbed it gently. "So do you."
Duo made an "mmm," noise and snuggled even closer to Heero. "Smile for me, Heero?"
"I'll sit here and smile for you all night, Duo. Thank you."
And he did.

Shi-chan: *cough* That was a little sappier and odder than I had planned.
Duo: I was looking forward to lemony goodness!
Heero: I certainly don't hope you mean with me.
Duo: Ummmmm.....ano, Hee-chan...
Heero: .....
Shi-chan: Look guys, it's snowing still! I'm lucky the power didn't go out before I finished the fic!
Trowa: *knocks on wood*

Duo: I liked it...
Wufei: YOU WOULD!
Shi-chan: Are you one to talk about taste in music?
Wufei: *defensively touches the headphones he's wearing.* I am listening to J-pop, onna.
Trowa: You're listening to card Captor Sakura again.
Wufei: URUSEI!
Shi-chan: What does this have to do with the fic...?
