Computer time-sharing

The first time-sharing computer operating system was called the compatible time-sharing system (CTSS). Developed at MIT in 1961, CTSS enabled multiple terminal users to access expensive host computers at relatively low cost by time-slicing the processing and by assigning slices only to jobs awaiting service. This required the development of appropriate networks to support multiuser and multitasking environments.

Advances in telephony

Several significant improvements to the telephone system have allowed effective connection of digital equipment into a network that was originally designed to carry only analog voice signals. For example, in the mid-1960s Bell Laboratories developed automatic equalization. In automatic equalization a modem can adapt its bit transmission process to match telephone line characteristics, thus achieving data rates of tens of thousands of bits per second. Bell Laboratories also designed the T1 carrier system for telephone transmission. First installed in 1962, the T1 system provided digital transmission of voice signals by time-multiplexing 24 voice channels, each using a 64-kilobits-per-second data rate, into a 1.544-megabits-per-second pulse stream in the article telecommunication). Digital transmission from end to end is required for implementation of the integrated services digital network (ISDN), described below.
