MYSTERY ON THE OUTER BANKS

CHAPTER ONE

As the Buick motored down I 77 South, also known as the West Virginia Turnpike, the Pathways still couldn’t believe that the time had finally come for their vacation! The stress of the school year and tax season had taken it’s toll on the nerves and patience of the beach bound family. As always the conversation turned towards the granddaughters left behind. Why does it seem that when folks go on vacation to get away from it all that they spend most of their time away from home talking and worrying about those at home? The cyber adventure was exciting last fall, but sometimes the Pathways felt they could do with a little less excitement and a little more relaxation. The Internet travels were viewed differently than before, but the puter was still an adventure that was enjoyed by both Shilo and Carrie. No puter on this trip! All the Pathway siblings were headed to the beach from various locations and the expectations were high for a vacation much anticipated and well deserved!

The Berkeleys were headed south bound on I 95 by way of Washington D. C., the Dairys were headed south on I 70 somewhere around Breezewood Pa., and the Inwood Pathways , Hughes was Shilo’s brother, were caught home working as their children were attending White Water Rafting camp at the Gauley River and Mother and Dad didn’t want to be that far away from the girls......just in case they were needed. Besides, Shilo had promised Hughes to bring back a jar of sand and a sea shell to listen to the waves........that would be like being there.....and cheaper too.

All roads were converging on Kill Devil Hill’s, North Carolina. A summer house on the beach had been longed talked about and this year it was going to happen! All were determined to have a great time and nothing was going to stand in their way! The trip was planned, viewed, and confirmed by the Pathways via the net, and the actual house was acquired sight unseen. O..there had been pictures and details of the arrangements available, but one never really knows till you see it in person.

Other family members hoping to make the trip, or at least a few days of it, were Michael Dairy, Charmaine’s husband, who was usually busy flying between London and New York keeping his new business a float and thriving. David, Shilo and Carrie’s youngest son, who was now stationed at Fort Campbell in Kentucky was going to try to make it along with his “significant other” Renee’. But the Army sometimes has other plans for the members of the armed forces. Russell and Denise had wanted to join the group but a trip to Missouri had been in the making for quite a while and it was there that they would spend most of their vacation. Ann, Shilo and Carrie’s daughter, and her husband Lee were busy making plans to take advantage of a cruise offered by Lee’s employer and the time away from LeAnn and Marie, their beautiful daughters was going to be hard enough. Finally, Mother Sweet, who had retired the previous year, had taken on a part time job that required her attention, and she was never one who liked to place her much loved dog and cat in a kennel. Daisy, the dog, was getting up in years and hadn’t been quite the same since her running buddy Ralph had expired several years ago, and Buffy the cat was still suffering from being hit in the head by a meat loaf she had pulled off the counter.

The beach house at 454 Moyer-1624 Virginia Dare Tr. was located 300’ from the ocean it fronted. The arrival date was Saturday July 5th. The realty company was located in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and it was there that the keys and final arrangements were to be made. The house was a rough wood two story with 4 bedrooms, 2 baths and a Jacuzzi. There were other items listed to make the house impressive, but as long as it was on the beach and standing the Pathways would be happy.

Carrie loved the beach, the warmth of the sun, the sound of the waves, just to sit, listen, and look at God’s beauty was enough to always lift her spirits. Her back bothered her continuously, as did the tendentious she had discovered in the fall. She always looked forward to a trip to the beach with Shilo, this trip would be a little different. She wouldn’t have him all to herself. Shilo didn’t care for the sand, oh the beach was great, but not in the motel rooms. He hated the inside sand. He was so patient and tolerant, he would do anything for Carrie.

*****

The conversation was light in the car. Everyone so excited to be meeting their relatives at Kill Devil Hills. There was no conversation for one member of the traveling crew . Only thoughts of finally getting to make the trip she had only dreamed about. Now the opportunity had arisen, this was her chance. How could I be so lucky, were her thoughts, as she curled up to take a nap after eating her cheese sandwich. Her long slender legs would be cramped, she couldn’t wait till she could get out and stretch. Her long blonde hair tucked neatly under her cap. The little bag she carried had very few contents, as she didn’t have enough room to pack luggage. She only brought along the bare essentials. She was happy, yes very happy. Even in the dark gloomy traveling arrangements she had made. She had never been more satisfied with a plan.

Charmaine and Brooklynn were excited to finally be heading for the beach after another long cold Wisconsin winter. The Dairys loved their life in the northern section of the country, but wished they could be closer the Pathway family members. Charmaine had grown up with Shilo, Palyn, and Hughes. Being the oldest of the four she had nurtured the others through the years. As time went by Charmaine had moved on and married Michael Dairy and spent the majority of her life hundreds of miles from the siblings she cared so much for. Her own children were practically grown, Warren was attending the University of Minnesota and enjoyed his studies there.......as well as the life style evident on a college campus. Missing mom’s cooking and the laundry service he took for granted all his life was only part of it........the closeness he had developed with his mother left a void that he had to struggle with. But he was doing well and coming into his own. Brooklynn was to be a junior in high school this coming fall. She loved tennis, of which she excelled and played year round to the level of obtaining national ranking, Elvis.....who she hoped to see at the beach, and certain young men who were always held at bay, but were ever present in her thoughts. Brooklynn was tall, dark, beautiful brown curly hair who’s length touched the small of her slender back. Many say that she looked more like Uncle Shilo’s child that her mother’s, and higher praise could not be given! The Wis Sis, as Charmaine was called on the net, dreaded the long drive, but she was used to it. Many times over the years she had made the trip south to West Virginia to keep in touch with family. But this was a different trip, for the first time most of the family were meeting at a location......a neutral location...not someone’s home. A true vacation with family and the fun and relaxation that would come along with it! Tucked away deep in the burgundy suitcase in the trunk was a little insurance policy....a novel she had yet to read. She certainly didn’t expect to have time to read with everyone present....but it was always better to be prepared. A quick glance at the watch let Charmaine know that she had better make tracks if she was to meet the others at the rest area outside of Richmond. She surely wanted to be on time! The last thing she wanted was to start off the vacation with the others waiting on her.

The Berkeley’s were well on their way to the meeting spot. Palyn riding in the front seat beside her husband R. R is the name he grownup with. Easy to spell and seldom had he shared the name with others, definitely one of a kind. Always laid back and relaxed, R was glad to get away from the plant where overtime was a way of life and night shift had grown old quickly. Palyn also worked at the plant, as well as Hughes, but worked day shift and was kept busy with her new found interest in computers. RJ, their son was curled up in the back seat playing the game boy. RJ was to be a senior in the coming school year, and his interests were deep seated in the school band, his friends, and the car he polished as if it were a magic lamp. The Berkeley’s had a daughter named Kaye who was awaiting boot camp in Texas. She had graduated a month earlier and was busy with her life tying up loose ends in West Virginia prior to her departure. The Air Force had always held her interest, her dad was in the USAF National Guard and her mom had sponsored the JROTC at school. In between the rest stops, which were frequent, and the heavy traffic, the Berkeley’s were glad they got an early start. There were many goodies in the trunk, Palyn always was picking up items for everyone, especially the kids......there were times when R wondered if he was going to have to wear layers of clothes and do away with his suitcase!

The Pathways always played games while on the road. Carrie usually won but Shilo loved to play games and she tolerated him to keep things smooth. The thermos of coffee was always a travel companion when long trips were in the making. The trip was the result of Shilo and Carrie picking up on Palyn’s idea and following through with it via the net, where all arrangements were made. As Shilo yelled Q for Dairy Queen, Carrie was checking the time on the bank clock at the Lexington Mall wondering if the sisters would be waiting for them in Richmond, hoping all would arrive at the right location.....it looked so simple on the atlas!

Three vehicles on three different roads from three different locations all headed for a common site. Seven members of the family accounted for.......plus one. Unknown to the travelers, one of them were hauling an extra passenger. A passenger with a mission, one that would change the plans of all mentioned. The next week would be exciting, but not in the way some had planned!

CHAPTER TWO

The Berkeleys were the first to arrive in Richmond. As they turned off the Highland Springs exit, all eyes were scanning the terrain for the Shoney’s Restaurant. Shilo had said it was a “can’t miss” land mark.....if you found the Chickahominy River, you had gone too far! RJ started yelling for dad to turn right. As they pulled in the lot the doors opened before the motor was shut off. A race to the bathroom was a welcome form of exercise. After the necessities were met, a table for 7 was requested in the smoking section, but none of the Berkeleys were too anxious to sit down!

Within 15 minutes the Buick of the Pathways pulled in and there were shouts and waves to bring them to the table. Hugs were passed out freely and a feeling of relief was expressed but wouldn’t be complete until the third car arrived. everyone was starving, but the meal would wait till then.

Finally Charmaine came to a stop along side the familiar vehicles. Brooklynn was anxious to see everyone as was mom but the stretching had to take place first. Another round of hugs and smiles were shared and the time had come for a wonderful meal. It was seafood night, Carrie’s favorite, but she would pass knowing the fresh sea food was awaiting her in a matter of hours now.

Unknown to all, the trunk of the Berkeley’s Thunderbird eased open and the uninvited traveler slid out from among the luggage, and headed to the restroom as if on a mission. She was careful not to draw attention to her self and in place of a hot meal, ran across the street to Pete’s carry out and quickly purchased water and a chicken salad. She wanted to stay and let her limbs feel the flow of blood again, but she knew if she was to get where she wanted, it was back in the trunk. Again the darkness surrounded her, and she prayed that the owners wouldn’t need to get in the trunk prior to arrival.

Laughter and family tales were the norm when the Pathways united. After the checks were taken care of, all headed to the cars. It was still about a 4 hour ride to the beach house and some traded traveling partners. Brooklyn and RJ climbed into the Thunderbird with R. Palyn and Carrie slid into the Buick. Shilo and Charmaine mounted the Jeep and all were ready for the final leg of the journey, after gas fill ups and snacks and cold drinks. They had just eaten but it was a long trip.

The heart of the stowaway practically leaped from her chest as RJ started to the trunk to retrieve another game for the game boy, but he turned around and reclaimed his seat when Brooklynn informed him that she had several games with her that he hadn’t tried. A huge sigh was given, loud enough to be heard over the beeps and buzzers of the game.

The remainder of the trip would take the caravan through Norfolk Va., the world’s largest naval base, south on 168 into North Carolina. The waterways and ships were beautiful. Sand and the landscaping made the vacationers feel as if they were almost there, which drug out the last hour of the trip. About 30 miles inside NC the road would become 158 East and it would be followed through Kitty Hawk where the keys and instructions would be distributed. On to Kill Devil Hills! Turning left and headed straight to the ocean, the beach houses were lined up and being filled with others ready for their long awaited vacation. The sign on the porch read 454 Moyer....here at last!

CHAPTER THREE

The doors flew open and everyone in rushed to the beach house as if a long awaited friend was waiting for them! The house was quickly explored, bedrooms staked out and the deck with the view of the ocean was soon crowded. It was home for the next week....there was suddenly a silence that fell over the vacationers.....it was as if the excitement, effects of the long trip, and the fact that they were finally there after making the plans in February......everything had caught up with them at once. It was over whelming!

The trunk of the T-bird eased open and the final traveler climbed to the road using caution. She scurried to the side of the house and headed for the crawl space which lead to the storm cellar. She had drawn on past experiences and took a gamble that this particular house had a cellar. As she settled in, she began making her plans, her contacts, and the methods in which she will accomplish her goals.

The cars were soon unloaded and the house was officially “moved into”. A quick meal was completed and walks on the beach were the next item on the agenda. The adults headed one way and the teens the other. The sounds and smell of the ocean seemed to be what the doctor ordered for the adults, Carrie and Shilo walked slowly holding hands...taking everything in....Carrie would live at the beach...she loves it so. R and Palyn walked along side the Pathways in silence, soaking it all in. Charmaine stayed within sight of the house, and after a brief visit to the beach, had thoughts of a quiet, hot bath and some time to her self.....she slipped into the house to enjoy the moment. There seemed to be some noises that seemed out of place coming from under the house, but little attention was paid to it, and the water was soon running and the radio was playing soft oldies....her favorite.

Brooklyn and RJ were busy talking about school and things to do during the week when they were interrupted by someone asking a question. When he looked up there was a tall slender blonde with soft blue eyes and a skin tone that suggested that she either spent lots of time in the sun, or in a tanning bed. RJ couldn’t focus on the question, but Brooklyn soon came to his rescue. No, they didn’t know where the bus to the Lost Colony picked up, nor when. RJ had trouble thinking about the Lost Colony when he was busy being Lost In Space! The threesome exchanged greetings and headed for the soda machine located by the carryout across the way. The stranger informed them of her having been to the area before, but long ago. The cousins shared information of their homes and lives, but little was shared in return. The chat turned to the activities of the week and things to do in the area. Plans were made to meet in the morning on the beach as Brooklynn and RJ headed back to their beach house. The blonde left too, taking a different direction. She craved a long slow walk to let her legs stretch, they had been cramped for quite a while. Her final destination was the same as the two she had just made contact with, but a hot shower wasn’t in the offering....perhaps a shower in the enclosed area by the house which was to be used for sunbathers and swimmers......early in the morning before the others arose.

The oldies had picked up the rhythm and the cards were being dealt. Charmaine volunteered to be the all time sub and fill in for all who had to leave the game, as she really wasn’t crazy about playing cards. The Pathways and the Berkeleys loved to play and the teen cousins formed a team to take on winners. In the morning, on the beach, the plans and activities for the coming week would be discussed and planned out. Most would be satisfied with just being there, the beach area itself being the entertainment. But they knew as the week went on, if a break to something different was offered, or groups headed various directions, they were not as likely to get on each other’s nerves by the week’s end.......after all they were family and all agreed that they would have to give one another some time for themselves.

Some of the places chosen to eat were the Coastal Cactus found at the Seagate Shopping Center, Awful Arthur’s which had locals night on Mondays, JK’s Ribs, Goombay’s Grille and Raw Bar, and Quagmire’s....just to name a few. Several of the locations offered night life, and all were wanting at least one night out....hopefully when Michael could make it.

The first night was coming to a close, and the smoker’s were headed to the deck to enjoy the night and the stars. Out on the sea beyond the breakers there was the flashing of a light in what seemed to be a code....the flashes were coming in a pattern. R, with his Air Force training picked up on it first. Then Carrie, who always had an inquisitive mind. The same pattern, as if waiting for a response. This continued for several minutes. Shilo called from the kitchen area to announce to all it was now midnight, and the second day of their vacation was about to begin. The lights were forgotten and everyone began to prepare for bed.....ready for an early beginning in the morning.

Below in the cellar, the unannounced guest was scrambling to find the infrared light she was sure she had brought with her. Cursing beneath her breath, all she could to was wait for midnight tomorrow. She had to get some rest, tomorrow would be busy.

Brooklynn and RJ curled up on the couches in the TV room reading themselves for a late night Stephen King movie.....”Sometimes They Come Back”.

Do they.........................?

CHAPTER FOUR

The sun was out early and hot on Sunday morning. The Pathways were up early and had coffee and hot cakes ready for all. With the early morning breeze feeling so wonderful, all the windows were open wide. By 10 am everyone was headed for the beach. Chairs, Umbrellas, coolers, reading material, and lots of lotion. The teens were sent out for the morning paper and off to the Aamco on the corner. They hurried back to deliver the paper and get to where they were going to meet their new friend. By the time the paper was brought to the beach, the discussion was into which of the sights in the area were going to be visited. The “Lost Colony” was at the top of their list. This was where the first English colony was built in America. The colony disappeared without a trace and to this day is unexplained. The state Aquarium, this was a must see also. The civil war ship wreck, Orville and Wilbur Wright Museum, and the outdoor drama “The Lost Colony”. The play sounded interesting as it was suggested that the one’s attending ride the “Pub Crawl” which was a beach bus.

The teens arrived just at the time the Lost Colony was being discussed. Brooklynn ask all to set a day for the visit and permission to invite a friend. Palyn and Charmaine thought this was a great idea and were anxious to meet the friend. So Wednesday afternoon was set to tour the sight and friends were invited. RJ could only smile. As the teens rushed off the adults began a game of beach volleyball. Several others wandered by where the Pathways had setup their spot, but by and large this section of the beach was theirs.

RJ and Brooklynn arrived at the meeting place at about the same time as their friend. The greetings were exchanged and oddly enough the blonde inquired about the Lost Colony first. This caught the teens off guard and somewhat took the air out of their balloon. It was their news and they looked forward to sharing it. Never the less, there invitation was expended and accepted. Now the next order of business was to discover the name of the mystery girl. She seemed to avoid the subject, but when push came to shove. she gave in. Akitta, Akitta? What an odd name, and through more discussion it was revealed that it was an eastern European name. Her mother and dad were Hungarians and came to this country in the late 80’s through the black market. Their escape from communist was costly, her mother died shortly after arriving in the United States of pneumonia. She had very little to say about her dad and seemed to get angry when questions about him were ask. She seemed to want to talk about the trip to the Lost Colony and the arrangements. Brooklynn ask where Akitta was staying and she didn’t give a direct answer, just that it was close. Wind Surfing was something all wanted to try so the remainder of the day was spent visiting the sight. It would take quite a bit a nerve to attempt this, but all three were determined to make it happen.

“Ride the Wind Surf Shop” was written across the front door, along with a picture of a surf board with a sail the colors of the rainbow. They made it look so easy! The “Dude”, as his name tag read, was by the door with a broad toothy smile, medium length sandy blonde hair that was tussled about and a tan that looked like he spent lots of time practicing his trade. The back room was set up as a demo room, a board mounted to a wave machine complete with sail. After a brief safety lecture, the trio took turns climbing aboard. All was going smoothly until Dude turned on the wind machine, which looked like the propeller from a B-28! Learning now to catch the wind in the sails to make the board move in the direction you wanted to travel was quite a task. Several hours later, the session was over, and plans were made to return tomorrow to try their “wind surfing” wings. Laughter filled the air as they left the shop, all had enjoyed the lesson, but Akitta seemed so intent and so focused, as if it was a matter of life and death! The week’s plans were beginning to come together, Monday lesson two, Tuesday solo wind surfing, and Wednesday the trip to the Lost Colony. In between lots of sun, swimming, and good eating! Brooklynn and RJ tried to talk Akitta into coming to the beach house to meet the family, but she insisted on going her own way, at least for the day. Goodbye were exchanged and the teens hurried back to the families spot on the beach. Akitta, as usual, returned to her home by a different route.

As they were coming down the beach, R and Shilo were demonstrating their kite flying skills to the women, but they seemed to draw giggles rather than praises. One could see that the adults had about all the sun they could take for one day and the caravan of belongings were taken to the house and left by the out door shower ready to be used again tomorrow. There was a fish cleaning table which had turned into a joke as none in the party ever brought home much. A fishing Derry was in the making, men versus women, upon the pier just down the beach. Everyone was having such a great time!

Dinner would be cooked over an open pit tonight and the Berkeleys dug out the pit in the sand lining it with stones found on the beach. A metal grill top was brought to the sight by Charmaine and lots of firewood had been washed upon the beach. The Pathways were in charge of gathering the wood, the only problem was that Carrie thought each piece would look great in her flower beds at Whip-Poor-Will farm! With a few pieces laid aside, the remainder was piled by the pit. As darkness came upon the Atlantic sea board, the flames were reaching for the sky, and corn on the cob, baked beans, and grilled salmon were in abundance for all. Akitta could only smell the food and dream as she finished her last fig newton. Perhaps when all was quiet, she would slip out and feast on the remains.....but she had to be back by midnight.

CHAPTER FIVE

As the Pathways and company were enjoying a night by the fire, stories were exchanged and some wine was being sipped. The more wine that was consumed, the better the stories sounded. Laughter could be heard along the beach and total relaxation and enjoyment was being shared by all. The subject of Akitta was discussed by all, the wind surfing lessons, the plans for the trip to Lost Colony, and the anticipation of meeting this mystery girl. She had the interest of all and the story of her family brought a somber silence to the gathering.

It was nearing midnight, and the signal to the ship was ready, the light was in hand. It would have to be quick....and short! There it was, the signal, she did not want it to have to be repeated. Her answer was on time, and direct...all was in place as planned. A quick response from the ship to acknowledge the message and all was dark again. There, with the contact made, it was up to her to carry out the assignment. She had waited a life time for this to occur, and it was about to take place. By the end of the week she would be reunited with her father, but would have to commit an act of treason to free him. The codes used by Fort Richie in Maryland would be traded for her father’s freedom. Akitta had worked there as a civilian clerk and made copies of codes employed by the United States Army in the newly accepted NATO countries in Eastern Europe. She had over heard Jeanette Sweet talk of her family vacationing on the Outer Banks. The timing was right, the method of travel was untraceable, and the family seemed to be her ticket to make the exchange at the Lost Colony. All just fell into her lap.

The flicker of lights did not go unnoticed by the vacationers, but since they were only repeated once, and then a brief blink of a different nature which didn’t follow the pattern last night, it was soon forgotten by all............by most, Palyn, Charmaine, and Carrie all quickly glanced at one another and as if in an unspoken language, looked at their watches.......realizing that what ever had taken place, did so at exactly the same time as yesterday!

There would be no grilled salmon for Akitta tonight, the family in the house stayed up until early in the morning. With the morning came the sea gulls who enjoyed the remains of the dinner. Another night in the cellar, but it wouldn’t be long, soon she would be with her father, soon the exchange would be made. Prison, or the chance of prison didn’t enter into the picture, after losing her mother, and spending years without her father, she was ready to be united with her family again. She sat combing her hair, passing the time, and the stars twinkled, and the tears on her cheek glistened in the moon light.

CHAPTER SIX

Monday morning, another beautiful day at he beach. The threat of evening showers was no problem for the vacationers. After another relaxing morning on the beach filled with sun, reading, conversation, and shell hunting an afternoon break was welcome! The teens hurried to the Wind Surfing Shop and soon were out on the waters trying out their newly acquired skills with Akitta and Dude. It was wonderful!!! At first falling into the waters was the norm, but as the morning went on the time spent actually wind surfing become longer and longer. The sea was calm, just right for beginners. They made a point to go past where the family was located, but by then the sun bathers had gone into the house to clean up for an afternoon of sight seeing. The teens were disappointed, but decided to keep the surprise for another day. After all, practice makes perfect. The women were headed to the malls and shops along the Outer Banks as the men were gathering up their gear and headed for the fishing pier. After all, a little practice and some conversation with the locals couldn’t hurt when the time would come for the fishing tournament.

The entire crew would reassemble themselves around 6 pm to go to Awful Arthur’s for dinner. Monday was local’s night, the meals were cheaper, the fun and music flowed freely! Everyone took their turns on the dance floor and line dancing was the hit of the night! At times a train was made and through the parking lot they would go! Even Brooklynn and RJ, who thought the whole idea was hokie, fully enjoyed the night. As the party moved to the beach house, the door was ajar, and the sound of water running in the upstairs bath was evident.

The two clues sent very different signals, one of an uninvited entry, and the other taking a shower? R and Shilo carefully went up the steps with Carrie on the phone ready to call for help if needed. Armed with a fillet knife and the handle of the beach umbrella, the two suddenly burst into the bathroom only to discover a tall slender blonde toweling off, who by the way had a beautiful tan. As she screamed it was hard to tell who jumped the most, Akitta or the men! The two carefully shut the door and proceeded down to the kitchen. It was not necessary for the police to be called. A woman in the shower, even if she was uninvited, seemed to pose no threat to the family. Palyn, Charmaine, and Carrie demanded to know what was going on, and the men only smiled. After the discovery had been shared, RJ volunteered to do a follow up investigation, only to be stared down by his mom. Given the description RJ and Brooklynn were certain of the intruders identify, and they shared the information with the family.

Dressed in blue jean cut offs and a lime green halter top, Akitta slowly made the trip down the stairs to face the music. She was welcomed by her friends and questioned by everyone else. Why the shower? Why come in when no one else was home? The questions were coming faster than she could answer them. Akitta told them the plumbing was off where she was staying, and upon arriving, found the house empty. She needed a shower so badly, that she thought she could finish before everyone returned from their outing. Apologies were accepted, and a snack and cold drink was in the offering. Everyone wanted to know about her family, where she was from, and who she was staying with. Palyn sat quietly through the conversation, there was something about this lady that seemed familiar........and the answers given were sending off signals of untruths. As she glanced at Charmaine and Carrie she could sense that they too had their doubts. The topic soon turned towards the Lost Colony trip, and it seemed Akitta had insight into the Colony that didn’t come from any travel brochure. What was her great interest in the Lost Colony? She ate as if she was starving! After several plates of leftovers and three glasses of lemonade, Akitta settled back into the love seat and in the middle of a sentence, was asleep. Not just dozing off, but snoring, mouth open, head rolled back asleep. Everyone just sat and stared!

The ladies headed for the deck and each knew what the other was thinking. Everything just didn’t seem right......and where had Palyn seen her before? Wouldn’t someone be worried about her? Do we wake her up and offer her a ride home? As they entered the TV room, the teens were into a show, and the men were planning an early morning fishing trip. The ladies couldn’t believe everyone was so casual about the whole thing. As the three women conversed, they decided the best thing to do for the young woman was insist she be driven back to her home. After all if one of their children, no matter what age, showed up at a strangers house and made herself at home without an invitation....they would want to know about it, so they thought this to be the best plan. The men and teens had already made the decision, Akitta was to stay with them, she could return home tomorrow. She had already called and had permission. So without any other discussion the young blonde stayed and shared Brooklynn’s room. The women rolled their eyes as they headed for the kitchen shaking their heads.

As she laid in the little bed, Akitta’s body melted into the mattress. She thought of her Dad and hoped she could get to him in time. Brooklynn loved old movies, she had tuned one in on the bedroom TV, she and her new friend were watching as the door to their opened ever so slightly. RJ was sneaking in to talk, he just could not go to sleep, was he thinking of this girl because his Mom had asked him to find out where Akitta was staying, or was he worried for her safety? For reasons unknown to him, he had a feeling this new friend was in danger. His cousin was so into the movie, she hardly noticed as RJ and Akitta went out to the upstairs deck. Once outside she told him of her plans. She needed someone she could trust, and this good looking young man was very eager to be of service. He sat and listened to all she had to say, then held her hand. Feeling secure with the new friends she had found. She was beginning to enjoy the view. For the first time, she could actually see the ocean, usually this time of night she was in the little storm cellar. Until now she had only sat and listened to the vacationers. As she sat in darkness, she heard the laughter, the music, the jokes, all of the families seemed to have a special closeness . She had grown up without a real family. She felt very envious of the Pathways.

CHAPTER SIX

The teens were first up on Tuesday morning, and were gone before the family was up and running.

R and Shilo were soon on their way to the docks at Nags Head to try their luck with jet skis. Neither had tried this before, but both were game for the adventure! RJ had wanted to attempt the skis, but he was busy with the girls and wind surfing was on his agenda for the day.

The women were planning a trip to the mall on this cloudy morning, and with everyone else busy the morning breakfast talk dealt with souvenirs and clothing. There were granddaughters Carrie wanted to buy for, Charmaine was looking for Michael, who was very difficult to shop for, but something unique from the banks may be welcomed. Palyn enjoyed buying for all, it didn’t matter who! Telephone calls were made to loved ones and everyone back home was doing well, and missing the company of the vacationers. Michael couldn’t make the trip, just too busy. David and Renee decided to save his leave for the NASCAR weekend planned for October, besides, they didn’t say anything but having the house to themselves was a treat. Time together had been rare in their relationship, and it was time well spent.

R and Shilo had selected their jet skis and were fully engaged in the process of handling and safety aspects of the equipment. Soon they were riding the waves in a way they had never dreamed of! The life vests were cumbersome, but welcome. The two skiers turned their rides north to run past the beach house for a little showing off. Shilo spent more time in the water than on top of it! R could not get enough of the ride, turning his ski into the waves, enjoying the flight about the white caps. By the time the two arrived at the Kill Devil Hills beach, the house was empty, and the spot on the beach deserted. They decided to head north to the sight where the wind surfers were taking up their new skill.

By the time they arrived, the three teens were handling the sails as professionals! Dude was there to guide them, but it was clear all were enjoying themselves! Shilo and R couldn’t resist the temptation of buzzing the surfers, and creating some man made surf. The laughter was uncontrollable. When the dolphins joined in the fun, the time flew by, and the men didn’t realize the four hour limit on the skis was about to come to an end. Saying their good-byes, the two parties went their separate ways, and Dude gave into the teens, allowing them to spend time on the ocean alone as he had to return for afternoon lessons.

As planned, the teens turned their boards towards the Lost Colony. They were soon approaching the sight as they eased their way around the cliffs that Dude had warned them about. There was a perfect location in the tall grasses of the cove to hide the equipment, hoping it could be there when they would need it. As they finished covering the soon to be get away sails, they cased the location. This was where Akitta was to meet the Russian Communist faction. The one’s that had been holding her father, the one’s with whom she would make the trade. Brooklynn and RJ were still working on a method to free her father without giving the agents the codes. Treason wasn’t something they wanted to be associated with, there must be a way to deceive the Russians, and free Akitta’s father. The teens began the trip back to the beach they called home. Their minds were so busy they didn’t notice the storm just over the horizon.

The ladies had spent the day under the roof of the mall, and although the time spent was enjoyable, they longed to get outside to enjoy the windy, salty, air. It was so dark as they crossed the parking lot, the lights coming on as the packages were being pried from their arms. It was all they could do to get inside the car and find their way home. The branches from the trees were soon littering the road. The traffic lights were swaying in the winds, and head lights were engaged as were the wipers. The sight of 454 Moyer was certainly welcomed to the shoppers. The bags were left in the auto as the women made the mad dash to the house. Arriving home only to find everyone was still out. Gave them something to worry about as the windows were shut and deck furniture secured. Carrie put on a pot of coffee, the trio decided to just sit it out and pray for the safety of their loved ones.

The teens had but their money together and hailed a cab. Taxis were few and far between on the Outer Banks and securing one was quite an accomplishment. They would ride as far as the $4.33 would take them, making a dash for home to finish the journey.

As R and Shilo approached the bay where the skis were rented, the waves finally won the battle, turning them both over. They were holding on when the oyster boat tossed them a line, taking them in tow up to the pier from where they started. Grinning and shaking hands as if the Darlington 500 had been won, thoughts turned towards dinner. They would call home to check on everyone, promising to bring back all the oysters they could eat...........if someone would fix them!

Palyn let out a scream that startled the others. She had just remembered where she had seen Akitta.........the day she went to Ft. Richie to bring mom home, her car had broken down....again........and the pretty blonde who was hired for the summer was in her office working on the computer system. Mother Sweet was in a hurry, and had left it up to the temp to finish the task and then shut down and sign off for the day. It was shortly after that when mom had to work two weeks overtime to make up for the temp help that hadn’t returned. Everything just didn’t seem right, her appearing, seemingly not staying anywhere, all this interest in the Lost Colony, the lights flashing in a pattern at the same time each night, noises in the house....that is when Carrie shouted out THE STORM CELLAR! Of course, the pamphlet had informed them of the storm cellar, beneath the house. What a better time to check it out than during a storm! As the women crawled beneath the house, the small bag was found, and sleeping gear. The remains of some leftovers and a change of clothing, the clothing that Akitta had worn the day before. The sound of the men arriving in the driveway matched the squealing of the teens running across the porch. Akitta stood on the edge of the steps, rain water running off her nose, her T-shirt. There was explaining to do, and lots of it!

The remainder of the night was spent listening to Akitta explain how she had used the computer in Mother Sweet’s office to access the codes. She told them the whole story. RJ and Brooklynn supported her with nods and smiles. Akitta knew she could trust her new friends and their families. After a pregnant pause, Carrie led the entourage of hugs and kisses. Akitta began sobbing........there was work to be done, the codes could not be given, that point was not up for debate. Something else would have to be worked out. The storm began to clear, the deck was again full of chairs, the vacationers and Akitta began plotting the recovery of her father.

The time seemed to go quickly with the passing of the night. When morning came sleep had yet to be achieved, but a plan had been designed. Everything would have to be precise, no room for mistakes by anyone. R and Shilo rented the jet skies, one vehicle was driven to the Lost Colony, as the others took the bus. The group met by the front gate. Akitta was so nervous, she hadn’t seen her Dad in so many years, and she had no way of telling him their plans. Everyone had an assignment. Carrie, Palyn, Charmaine, and the three teens were to be in the same group. Akitta would pretend to be Carrie’s daughter. So the three women set out with the three younger ones and began their tour. R and Shilo were already scouring the Colony. Not really knowing what to expect, they were looking for something that looked out of place. As they walked with the tour guide, their eyes kept searching. Then R noticed a building that had not been mentioned by the guide. He pointed this out to Shilo and with a nod, the two men slipped away from the tour and ventured toward the little building.

Chapter Seven

The women had taken the scenic tour. Not wanting to be in the same tour as the men. They were to find an easy access to the hidden getaway gear. As they walked along, RJ saw a building that he thought he had seen the previous day, as the gear was being hidden. He got his Mom’s attention, he nodded towards the building, Palyn gave the signal to Charmaine and Carrie. They discreetly slipped away from the tour group and found a side entrance to the building. This would be the way to get Akitta’s Dad to the getaway location. After close investigation, they caught up with the tour and continued as planned. They were to meet the men at the picnic area at lunch time.

Everyone was starved, but little food was consumed as they waited for the men. Carrie kept reassuring Akitta that all would be fine. She was the oldest of the group, she and Shilo had raised their family. Having RJ, Brooklynn, and now the young lady, Akitta, was a good feeling to the Pathways. They were always helping someone in need. Adventure is what keeps them young, this was their motto........ Just as the ladies were starting to worry that something had happened to the men. Akitta shouted out, she spotted the two men approaching before any of the others. In her eyes it was like seeing a long lost friend. Praying they had found the building she ran to meet R and Shilo.

Now they would finally eat, Shilo could think better on a full stomach. As lunch was being served, whispers were buzzing at the picnic table. Indeed the men had found the building in which the prisoner was being held. Akitta was the only one who could send the message to the ship. R had military training, but no one had shared this info with Akitta. It was to be their insurance policy, he would be able to read the message, to make sure Akitta had been telling them the truth. He believed her in his heart, but his military mind told him to be cautious. At the end of the visit to the Lost Colony everyone left the same way they had gotten there. At 10:00 pm sharp all systems were go as RJ, Brooklynn and Akitta were being dropped off by the rock cliffs. R and Shilo were on their way on the jet skis. The women were to wait in the car, it had been parked in the shadows of the trees.

Akitta had practiced for two hours with R’s help to create a new code. One that the Russians would think was the correct code. She prayed they would fall for the incorrect information and release her Dad. The night was calm as Brooklyn and RJ made their way down the cliffs, with Akitta staying a few feet behind them. She had to be high enough on the cliff, so her message could be read. R and Shilo arrived at the bottom of the rock just as the teens were making their last scramble for the safety of the beach. They were exhausted, but was so glad to see the jet skis. The men were securing the skis and going over last minute plans. R had to make the climb to meet Akitta, as he climbed he thought of his own children and prayed they would be safe. The ocean was fairly calm, so if all went according to plan they would be back at the beach house by 1:00 am.

Shilo sat on the beach with the two teens and tried to keep them calm. He was really getting into this new adventure, hadn’t fallen off the ski on his trip to the meeting place. The three women were waiting in their car just a few feet from the path which leads to the rock cliff. The path the stranger was to climb to meet them.

At exactly 12:00 the lights were seen, the signal was being sent from the ship, first one was to the guards who were now on the roof. The second to Akitta, then back to the guards. As Shilo and his crew got into position he gave them hugs and wished them luck. R read the messages, she gave them the wrong code, with a smile on his face and a grip to Akitta’s hand he made his descent. She had to be the only one on the rock cliff, when her Dad was brought down.

As she looked through tears she ran to hug her Dad, and whispered in his ear. Go to the path that leads back up the cliff, the one to your right, trust the women, they will take you to a safe place, I will meet you there in one hour. Then they began to walk slowly down the cliff. Knowing they were being watched by the guards, they held hands and didn’t look back. As soon as they were out of sight, he went up the path and she continued down the cliff, R was at her side now. He had been waiting to pose as her Dad. He was about the same build and had more experience than Shilo. He held her hand as their pace picked up. No room for mistakes. Shilo had the skis ready, RJ and Brooklynn had all three sails up and ready. Akitta jumped on hers and they were off, surfing side by side. R and Shilo started on their journey back to the beach house.

As he made his way up the path, he spotted the car. He stayed hidden in the trees, making sure no one else was around. He didn’t hear a sound, then the engine started up. He had no choice except to trust his daughters instructions. He got within feet of the car, stopped and knelt down to get a better view. He could see three women, one was standing just outside of the back door on the passenger side. The other two inside. Oh no!! all three were blondes, was his first thought. The one outside kept looking at her watch, he saw the headlights come on and made a dash towards the car. He was shoved inside and pushed behind the back seat, he crouched down as the back of the seat came slamming down on him. Charmaine jumped in closing the back door and Carrie pushed on the excelarator. Palyn using the binoculars, could not see any movements so they proceeded down to the main road.

The guards started down the cliffs and saw the jet skis leaving. They did not see the three sails, they were already around the bend. With the wind and salty water on her face, Akitta had tears running down her cheeks. This plan has to work was all she could think, she looked over at her two friends, who gave her the thumbs up sign. The three were making tracks to the rental sight. Dude would never know they had been a few hours late on the return of their equipment. Now all they had to do was go up the beach to meet up with the rest of the group. After they were on the beach they fell to the ground with laughter. This was the most excitement RJ and Brooklynn had ever had on one of their family vacations.

R and Shilo turned off the engines and let the skis float to shore. They put them back in the spot they had taken them, sneaking out as quietly as possible. Once they were far enough up the beach to feel safe, they looked at each other and smiled. R handed Shilo a cigar and they sat down and looked out to the ocean. They watched as a small boat met up with the large Russian ship, they could not make out what was happening. They had forgotten to bring along their binoculars. Not far away the three women sat on the deck staring at Akitta’s father in complete amazement, as he too was looking at the ship. He had Palyn’s binoculars and could make out very clearly what was happening. The two guards who had held him captive were boarding the ship, the little boat then made its way back to shore. The Russian ship went out of sight.

With everyone back at the beach house feeling so proud of themselves, it was decided to leave Akitta and her Dad to enjoy some privacy. The women got showers and the men had a snack. RJ and Brooklynn fixed a plate of food and took it to their friend and her Dad. They were sitting on the beach with arms around each other. What a sight RJ thought as he handed Akitta her plate. The teens wanted to stay, but knew their instructions were to get back inside. With a light heart they ran back inside and got ready for bed. They had decided to share the room with the bunks. This would give Akitta and her Dad Brooklynn’s room to sleep in. By three o’clock everyone was in bed and sleeping. Each with their own dreams.

Shilo and Carrie just curled up and were asleep in no time. R and Palyn talked for a while, then fell asleep. Charmaine and Brooklynn shared some chocolates and talked about how Michael would never believe this vacation story. What an adventure this had been for them. Charmaine kissed Brooklynn and gave her a warm hug, she felt so lucky. Brooklynn joined RJ in the little bed room. As RJ climbed to the upper bunk he told his cousin good night, and he couldn’t wait till the next morning to see Akitta again...... Akitta lay in the twin size bed and looked at the man sleeping so soundly. She hadn’t seen him since she was a small child. But she had never forgotten how handsome her Dad was, with his high cheek bones and the rugged look of a hard working man. If she only had her Mom....... then she rid her mind of those thoughts and fell asleep, dreaming of her Dad holding her and singing a lullaby to her.

Chapter Eight

Thursday was a bright sunny day. After a few hours sleep, breakfast eaten and tons of coffee drank. The group gathered on the lower deck to listen to the story told by the man they had rescued just hours earlier. His name was Kostavic, and his life’s story was as intriguing as the spelling of his name! The ordeal of leaving what was then a communist Hungary, the trip to the United States, losing his wife.....was all so over whelming! Kostavic, not being able to support his daughter in a new land, began running suspicious messages. The Baltic section of Baltimore was known for its underworld connections. Numerous factions could be found, including the Hungarian connection to communist Russians, bent on restoring Russia to its rightful place in the world. He became valuable to the Russians. As he became more involved, he depended upon the connection to support his family.......and pay off medical bills. Finally when the communists had used him for all he was worth, they kidnapped him, and forced his daughter to work for them. She had been living with friends in the area and spoke with her dad only through brief monitored phone conversations. When the opportunity presented itself, they called her hand. Forcing her to steal codes needed from a U.S. Army base.....in exchange for her father.

Akitta was surprised the Russians delivered her dad as promised. They must have been completely finished with him.

As everyone was wrapped up in the explanation and story delivered by the reunited family, several rubber dingies were coming to a stop upon the sandy beach...men with automatic weapons and dressed in black scuba suits eased out of the boats.....toward the summer rentals.......searching for the house where the light signals originated!

CHAPTER NINE

The sound of the helicopters hovering overhead brought the Pathways and friends to the deck facing the ocean. The sight of a dozen men in black with weapons struck fear into the hearts of everyone! The choppers settled upon the sand sending a sand storm swirling throughout the beach. All of the sudden the soldiers sprinted from the choppers and took up positions along the beach houses! Another wave of helicopters and amphibious ships stormed the beach behind the now trapped men in black. There was a blast of automatic weapons being fired......shouting......orders being given first in English then in Russian!

By the time the sand had settled, and the vacationers had the nerve to peek from behind the now over turned tables on the deck, two men in black were lying upon the golden sands of the beach in front of the beach house. There was no movement coming from the two, and little if any attention given them. The remainder of the men in black had thrown down their weapons and quickly shot their hands into the air. The soldiers swarmed the men and the boats from which they came. Upon the sea one could see several war ships approaching the Russian vessel accompanied by the sound of Black Hawk helicopters and F-16s over head. Soon the choppers were loaded and the rubber boats with their crews were gone. This all took place in a matter of seconds, which seemed like hours!

The knock on the door startled everyone! Captain Mecure and numerous other military personnel were upon the door step of the door facing the street. Quietly they entered and requested all present to identify themselves. Kostavic’s expression changed with the mood of the moment. Akitta placed her arms around her father’s waist and held on tightly. One by one the Pathway family greeted the visitors and gave their names and addresses of home. When it came to the newly reunited family silence fell over the room. The Captain spoke first, giving the names of the two and seemingly their life story. He was more interested in Akitta and her removing the codes from Fort Richie than with her father. Sympathy was in his voice and kindness in his eyes as he approached the pair. Akitta and her father were requested to come with the Captain for a debriefing, and possibly charges filed. Shilo spoke first, loudly, and with firmness.....if they were to go then his lawyer was to be contacted. Until he could arrive, Shilo insisted that he be allowed to accompany the Hungarians/Americans. The Captain agreed, an assured all that it was not his intention to press charges, only to gather information to prosecute the ones arrested upon the beach, and hopefully have enough information to impound the Russian ship......then to follow up the investigation to the fullest extent of the law.

The vacationers were informed that there had been an investigation going on for sometime. Akitta was allowed to remove the codes so easily because they were placed where she could remove them......false as they were. They figured that Akitta would lead them to the true criminals. She was being watched, and even followed from Martinsburg to Kill Devil Hills. Everyone was stunned!!!

After calls were made, it was decided that the questioning would take place in the living room of the beach house. Computers with video/audio capacity were brought in and the conference began as soon as the lawyers arrived. The government agencies had gone out of their way to comply with the wishes of Akitta and Kostavic. A dramatic change from the governments they had known in their lives. Soon the equipment was put away, and good-byes spoken. There was a collected sigh of relief as the door was closed.

Soon all realized that it was Thursday afternoon, and the vacation was quickly passing by, but what a vacation! Akitta and her father were desperate to clean up and spend time together. The Pathway clan soon decided to give them some time alone. Everyone quickly cleaned up and were on their way with poles. The men were headed to the pier to catch supper, as the women staked claim to a table with a beautiful view of the ocean, and study the menu.......just in case. A soft white wine was slowly being sipped, and shrimp cocktails were ordered. Several hours later a proud R strutted down the pier followed by Shilo and RJ. Two huge tuna were being held high....soon to be grilled over an open flame at table side. The secret was to be kept among the men that the fish were purchased on the pier and poles were lost over the edge. Carrie just smiled...she always knew of things like this, and still she just smiled.

As the moon rose over the gentle waves, everyone began the journey back to the house, slowly enjoying the moon lit beach. Carrie and Shilo slipped off to them selves...there was something they had planned on doing on the beach, almost on a dare. The teens made way to the amusement park at the end of the beach to ride the go carts. R, Charmaine, and Palyn climbed the steps to the house, collapsing on the deck. It was not until Palyn went inside that she noticed the note on the table. It was from Akitta and Kostavic...they had left for Virginia Beach to spend time away from everything, and get to know one another. They promised to keep in touch..they would see everyone Saturday morning prior to the Pathway family departing for home. Thanks were in abundance, promises were made. A relieved but sad feeling was present in the house. The vacation had been on a fast track, everyone welcomed a pause in the action.

Tomorrow would be Friday the last full day on vacation. How time flies. A day on the beach enjoying one another’s company was in store.....the quiet time was welcomed!

CHAPTER TEN

The day was perfect, a gentle wind, bright sun, and lots of conversation. Even the teens were ready for a break in the action. Shilo and Carrie decided they would try to retrace the events of the past 6 days and put it into words. Charmaine wished Michael could have been with them, everything was almost too much to believe. Brooklynn thought the whole thing would make a great screen play, and she was anxious to take the story to begin putting it into production. RJ was hoping to hear from the long legged blonde, she didn’t even have the opportunity to hear him play his trumpet! Palyn and R felt as if they would see them again in the Martinsburg area, perhaps they could help Kostavic find employment in the area.

Saturday morning came and the cars were loaded for the return trip home. Palyn was sure to check her trunk twice. As promised, Akitta and her father were there to wish them well. They had decided to take the Captain up on his offer to employ them both at the Hungarian Embassy. They only had to make contact with someone called Paperarmor. What an odd name for an American they thought!

When the highway split at Richmond, everyone said their good-byes. Next year at a different place, the vacation would be continued.
