Kizuato
~ an old wound ~

by Lilinpo

“I don’t know, Trowa… It stopped raining, but—“
The police officer glanced at Quatre and whispered to Trowa.
“The city is packed with freaks…. Especially at this hour… I don’t know if the kid’s alright….”
Trowa nodded and looked at the clock. Almost 2 hours since Quatre noticed the boy, Duo, was missing. Trowa and Heero flew to Quatre’s place and immediately called for a searching crew.

   “Quatre…”
Trowa sighed at Quatre who was walking about the room, restlessly.
   “Calm down. He’ll be okay..”
Trowa chuckled inwardly of how cruel he was. Years of training taught him to make victim’s families calm… Lying usually did the trick. He would tell them it’ll be okay, even though he thinks otherwise. He was doing the same with Quatre…

“He was here when I was on the phone…. And then… just disappeared……”
“..Like how he appeared from nowhere….”
Quatre was afraid he’d lose the boy forever. He only had been with him for two days, but he felt as though they have been together for a very long time.
Quatre felt as though Duo was gone on vacation and came back.
   “Quatre, sit down.”
Trowa gently pushed Quatre on the couch and patted his shoulder for comfort. He looked at Heero who was looking outside the large window. He may not show it, but Trowa knew he was concerned.
   “I’ll go make some coffee.”
Trowa stood up and started to head for the kitchen when the door opened.

   “Quatre~!! I’m ba~ck!”
They all stared at the little figure wiping his shoes. He realized there were guests and looked around the room with big eyes.
   “Duo!? Where were you!!!??”
Quatre yelled and ran to hug the little Duo tightly in his arms. Duo noticed Quatre was shaking and detected he was the center of the attention.
   “Ah….. Sorry…”
Duo placed his arms around Quatre and dug his face in his shoulder.

Trowa and Heero were speechless. The boy didn’t just look like Duo… He was exactly like Duo…

“Uhh.. Well, I guess everything’s okay. I’ll call in the boys.”
One of the officer said and took out his two-way radio.
“..Uh… Yes.. Sorry for your time. You guys head home.”
Trowa finally managed to speak. The two police officers were contacting the search crew to tell them the missing boy has safely come home. They headed to the door.
“Hey, kid. Stay outta trouble, okay?”
One of the officer patted Duo’s head. The boy smiled and nodded.
“Hey, Trowa. You know the little accomplice with our Boy? Get this, she was shot tonight in this neighborhood and was taken to a nearby hospital.”
One of the officer told Trowa the great news from the two-way. Finally, this was the big break they were looking for.
   “How is she?”
Trowa smiled inwardly, but didn’t want to get ahead of himself. The accomplice wouldn’t be of any help if she couldn’t talk…

“She’s okay. She was only shot in her shoulder. Wufei said there’s nothing to worry about.”
The little boy announced. He smiled uncomfortably when everyone’s eyes were fixed on him.

   “…Trowa… Who is this kid…?”
The officer asked, keeping his eyes on the boy in Quatre’s arms. The other officer demanded an explanation as well.
“He’s the son of Quatre’s friend. Now, go home and take a rest. Tell them I’m going to see her first thing in the morning.”
Trowa regained his coolness and guided the officers out.
Quatre looked into Duo’s eyes.

   “…You saw Wufei…?”
Duo nodded and raised his arms to show the oversized jacket.
“I was wet so he took me to dry up and lend me his jacket.”
Duo smiled, dangling the long sleeves.
Trowa came back in the room and sat on the couch to face Quatre and Duo. Heero stood still, staring coldly at the mysterious boy.

   “…That’s.. Trowa … and.. Heero..”
Duo whispered in Quatre’s ear. Quatre saw the excitement in the boy’s eyes.
   “Yes they are.. But Duo..”
Quatre put his hands on the boy’s shoulder and blocked his view.
“Why did you run out in the first place? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Quatre wanted to make sure the little boy had some reason to run out on him like that. He captured Duo’s eyes, not willing to let go.

   “OH YEAH!!!”
Duo suddenly jumped up and ran to the door.
“I forgot all about them!! I’ll be right back, Quatre~!!”
   “DUO!!!?”
The boy was already out the door. Quatre got up and started to the door when a hand came up on his shoulder.
   “I’ll go.”
With that, Heero went out the door. Quatre turned to Trowa with a look of uncertainty.
“It’s okay, Quatre… Trust him for once..”
Quatre nodded and turned back to the opened door. He slowly walked and closed it.

The boy was fast for his size, but it was easy for Heero to catch up. But instead of doing so, Heero slowed his pace to follow the boy. He obviously has a place to go.
Heero saw the boy running in an alleyway. As he ran in, he noted little markings of blood on the ground. He figured this was where the shooting took place.

“—ry to keep you guys waiting…”
Heero stopped when he heard a little voice around the corner. He slowly approached and saw the little figure kneeling down in front a box.
“Something came up and I had to help someone.. But I promised I’ll come and get you.”
Duo smiled and put his arms in the box. Heero then detected some form of life.
“Aww.. You kept them nice and warm.. You’re good mommy, aren’t you?”
Duo pulled out his arms, and with it came an white feline. She purred at the touch of Duo and snuggled her nose in his chest.

   “..You are white as feather…”
Duo looked into the cat’s eyes. Heero froze.

“—and has eyes of shining sapphires…”
Heero couldn’t move.

   “…You keep everyone alive…. A Savior…”
Heero’s body was trembling. Not from the cold air but…

   “So, I think I’ll call you Heero…”
The little boy patted the white cat who meowed in agreement. Then he slowly turned around to see Heero who was still shocked.
“Ne? What do you think, Heero?”

?!! Duo!!
Those eyes…
the smile…
the voice…
            It was Duo….

“No!! It can’t be!!!”
Heero shook his head and turned away from the boy. He couldn’t take this anymore…. He was actually seeing Duo in the boy. He decided to head back.
“Wait, Heero!! Can you help me carry them? Please??”
The boy had the sad little puppy eyes…. The same eyes that used to beg Heero all the time…
Heero wanted to ignore him, but knew he was responsible for this boy at the moment. He had to take him home safely to Quatre.
Heero sighed and approached the box. He saw kittens meowing weakly at him.
He noticed one of them wasn’t moving.
“That one died from the cold… I’m going to make a little grave for him…”
Duo saw the questioning eyes of Heero and told him the sad news. Heero didn’t respond, but he gently picked up the box. Duo followed with Heero in his small arms.

“Your Wing is totally the opposite from mine.”

What’s the difference? They’re both killing machines…

“No, I meant that my aibou is like a devil, and yours is like an angel.”

…..So?

“It’s perfect!! You are white as feather, and has eyes of shining sapphires…”

….What are you saying?…

“Don’t you get it? You keep everyone alive…. A Savior……
Wing was meant to be yours, Heero…”

Kizuato=a scar
aibou=partner (Duo always calls his Deathscythe aibou. You knew that, right?)
I used Kizuato for the title because this was when everyone had met the little Duo. (Did you notice Heero was the last one to see him?) Well, to Heero, it’s like opening up his old wound again.. The memory of his beloved. (wink*)
But I have to admit, I had at least five other options… But I went with this title because I didn’t want to keep you guys waiting.
