      “Thank you.”

I hate that word more than anything…
It sounds as tough I have done someone a favor.

I only do things for myself and my missions.
Nothing else.

That is why I have never received such a phrase.
And I was glad.

Until that one day…

   That idiot…

“We’ll cover you, Heero! Go on ahead and destroy the base!”

It was my second mission with Quatre and him. I don’t know why Dr. J wanted him to tag along, but I accepted the mission as always.

“Oh man! I did not get enough sleep for this!!”

He kept complaining. I knew he only had an hour of sleep that day because he’d just come back from the other mission. But that’s a poor excuse… An hour of sleep is more than enough for me.

“Shut up and keep your eyes open, baka.”
I glanced at his side and detected an mobile suit ready to attack from behind.

   “DUO!!”

Quatre shouted. He quickly turned around, but I knew he wasn’t going to make it. I instinctively aimed and fired.

   “Duo, are you okay?!”

Quatre went by his side. I turned away and went on with my mission.

Later that day, I went in my room to report the mission.

And then a knock on a door…

“Heero, it’s Duo. Can I come in?”
I didn’t reply. I continued to type when I heard the door open.
“…. No response usually means no.”
I glared at him. He closed the door behind him and smiled wickedly.
“It means yes in my book.”
I sighed and went back typing. I sensed him looking around and sit on the bed behind me.

   “……..What do you want?”
I said irritably, hinting him to leave me alone.

   “Thank you.”

My fingers stopped typing. I slowly turned around and saw him smiling.
   “……What did you say?”
He tilted his head a little, probably wondering why he was getting glared at.
“About earlier today… I was almost done for, but you saved me. And I didn’t thank you for that yet.”

At that point, I wanted to throw him out of the room. But unfortunately, I was too tired.
“You don’t have to thank me. I didn’t save your life for you, I saved it for the mission.”
I replied with the coldest, emotionless voice. Now go away…

“It doesn’t matter if you saved me for the mission or not. As a result, my life was saved. Right?”
“And as a result, we completed our mission. So we are fair. Why are you thanking me?”
I sighed and started to type again. I’d never want to hear that word again….

“Heero, why are you typing your mission report already? It’s not due today.”
Great, he’s still here. How can I get rid of him? He leans on the chair I’m sitting on and peeks at the monitor.
“I always type it right after the mission. Now go away.”
I push his arms away, but he still held his ground.
   “Why is that?”

I could here my blood rushing in my head. I almost jumped out of my seat and yelled.
   “Because I want to!!”
My hands were ready to strangle him. I’ve expected him to be shocked, but he widened his smile and tapped my shoulder.
“Me too. I say ‘thank you’ because I want to.”
He pushed me down on my chair and patted my head.
“Now you go on typing your little report. Okay Heero chan?”
With that, he skipped happily to the door and was gone…

I don’t know how my face looked then, but I probably looked like an idiot.
