₪ COMMENTARY ₪ Northern Sun's sire, Pleasant Colony, sired seventy-three stakes winners, including thirty-one graded stakes winners, from the six hundred forty foals he sired during his lifetime. The pedigree of EARTH COLONY shows line breeding to many superior ancestors. He is line-bred 5 x 5 to leading sire and Saratoga Cup winner PRINCEQUILLO, a very sound horse that carries the valuable strain of English Champion Tracery. PRINCEQUILLO is out of a stakes winning daughter of PAPYRUS (Tracery-Miss Matty) who won the English Derby. Bred and Raced by, Norfields (Joanne Nor) also the breeder of BEHRENS & DESERT STORMER. Also superior for sporthorses. The estimated amount that his progeny earned was at $52 million. He came within one-and-a-half lenghths of winning the Triple Crown in 1981; he lost it to Summing in the Belmont. He had fourteen starts where he had six wins, three places, and one show. Pleasant Colony earned over $960,000 in just the two years of his racing career. Four of his wins were the Kenucky Derby, the Preakness, the Wood Memorial, and the Woodman Stakes. He was retired from a fourth place finish in 1981 after the Marlboro Cup Handicap, and died at age twenty-five. We have Northern Sun to carry on his legacy. His Majesty, Nort's paternal grandsire, raced twenty-two times with five wins, six places, and three shows. He earned over $99,000. A major race that he won was the Everglades Stakes. He took place in the Widener Handicap and third in the Seminole Handicap and Bahamas Stakes. His Majesty set a new track record at Hialeah for nine furlongs in 1:46 2/5; he died at age 25. Northern Sun's paternal granddam, Sun Colony, raced an amazing fifty-seven times, where she had five wins, ten places, and five shows, earning $85,105.
Northern Sun's dam, Earthland, raced fifteen times and came out with one win and one show. She earned $14,750. Northern Baby, Northern Sun's grandsire on his dam's side, raced seventeen times. He had five wins, two places, and five shows, earning $337,357. The major race that he won was a grade II race Champion S. Gr.1 Prix Dollar. Northern Dancer, Northern Sun's maternal great-grandsire, won the Kentucky Derby in exactly two minutes in 1964 where he beat Hill Rise by a neck. He also won the Preakness, but fell short of winning the Belmont Stakes. On June 20th, 1964, he won the Queen's Plate and was thus named Canada's Horse of the Year and the top three-year-old in America. In eighteen starts he won fourteen times, placed and showed twice each (he never placed worse than third). He earned over $580,000 and proved to be as great on the track as he was a sire. In 1970 he was the leading stud in England and the same in American in 1971. Northern Sun raced once while he has been with me (how he did previously is unknown to me, but the preson I bought him from said he was a racehorse, so we trained him as such), and won a grade one rated race. This was when he was four years old. After that he was put into trainig for eventing, but focusing on all aspects of the English world. He is doing fairly well for his first time out in the shows, and I expect he'll be placing better as time passes. He does have three good gaits. This handsome stallion is the clown of the barn and he definitely has his own horse sense of humour. While standing next to you he will mess up your hair by simply mouthing at it with his lips. He enjoys getting you just as wet as he is when he is receiving a bath. He is a horse that will bloat his stomach not to avoid the tightness of the girth but to frustrate you. Northern Sun really does make life around the barn livelier than it would be without him. Northern Sun has proven himself as a racehorse sire. Already he has sired six offspring, three of which are old enough to race. His star colt, SI Unruly Luminary is a GI stakes winning racer. He has only raced ten times and from those races has earned over $880,000. This is spectacular news! Congratulations to MHF! Another of his sons, also owned by MHF, SI Boreal Sun Beelzebub won his very first race. We are looking forward to more of Nort's offspring to run. He has already passed on his speed, stamina, conformation, and heart. Why not breed a Northern Sun baby today? |
